I am really desperate. I bought Trados freelance, multiterm desktop, multiterm extract, phrasefinder. I downloaded all of it and have all my licenses but it does not work.
Workbench only shows Sample and I cannot save a new file for my memory.
Phrasefinder says - abort download - must be supported by Windows 2000 or higher - but I have vista and it should support it.
Multiterm is empty.
When I click on Multiterm extract it says - error initializing-

I am desperate. SDL will not help because I did not buy a support contract and now they are just rude.

Also does someone know where I can get a printed user guide for all the software?

Thank you so much.
Gabriele

I suggest addressing the issues one at a time Aug 18, 2008

Hi Gabriele,

Did you download user guides as part of the package? If so, you can print these out, but be aware that they are several hundred pages.

Let's start with Workbench. First of all, what is the version number? (Click on "Help", and "About", and then you will get a box where the top line shows you the exact version number).

Secondly, what is the problem that occurs when you open Workbench? What you do mean by "it only shows Sample"? There is a sample TM (translation memory) that comes with the software, if I remember correctly.

However, to begin working, you first of all have to create a translation memory of your own. Do you know how to do this yet? If not, that is where we begin.

Best regards,

Astrid

Multiterm is empty Aug 18, 2008

And for what reason it should be not empty? You have to create the content on your own; Trados is only a tool and not a translation provider.

It seems like you were expecting something like machine translation by Trados. It's note the case.

First, refer to the manual and to Trados Support Forum here on proz.com.

A.

Thanks for the first reply Aug 18, 2008

Hello Astrid,
Thank you for getting back to me.
I have Version 8.0 Freelance.
When I click on workbench, workbench opens and in the lower left hand it says (2) The system cannot find the file spezified. I have no idea what that means.

I believe I have to create a new memory by clicking on file and new. But then a file is created which says file cannot be read.

This is just one of the many problems.

Thanks
G

Thanks Andrzej.
I know that I know that Trados is not a translation provider but the whole page should not be empty. No matter what I click on there is no text and no drop down menue opens.

Your statement doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of Trados. You have basically two working environments for your translations: in MS Word using macros or in TagEditor.

You are right that it is necessary to create a new TM for your work. But I don't quite understand your statement "a file is created which says file cannot be read". Do you mean that when attempting to create a new TM Workbench gives you an error which state that the file cannot be read?

As for the lack of support from SDL/Trados, welcome to a very large club. It is rare that the company has much useful to say anyway; you'll usually find better support here or on the YahooGroups forum for the product (see http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/TW_users/). The contempt that the company shows for its user base is just one more reason why it is usually better to invest one's time and money in the competition (DVX, MemoQ, etc.)

License file Aug 19, 2008

Hello Gabriele,
have you correctly located your license file (license.lic file, or *.lic)?
In the workbench, go to Help -> License manager.
You shoud have something like
Available licenses:
MultiTerm Desktop, Version 8.0
S-Tagger for FrameMaker, Version 8.0
S-Tagger for Interleaf, Version 8.0
...
in the opening window.
If not, click on the "license locations" button. Click on "Add" in "license locations" and
select the correct license file.
Then OK and Close. You might need to restart the application.

Let me know if that helps.

Gabriel

Bought Trados freelance, multiterm, extract etc. but does not work Aug 19, 2008

Hi Gabriele,
Don't panic. I think you should go one module at a time, probably starting with Word and Workbench (basic Trados).
First you have to find out if the installation was performed correctly.

Please note that SDL provides free assistance with installation and licensing as a point of policy and they are actively involved in Trados forums. You have to indicate Installation Failure or Licensing Problem in your support request, otherwise it will be ignored.

Start by using the tutorials. You can start with Trados for Idiots
by Life Jensen which is a very simple (and fun to do) introduction (http://www.danishtranslator.net/).

A very good tutorial is SLD Trados Training.pdf by Jerzy Csopik that I seem to recall is in the forum's database.

Leave Multiterm and the other modules for later.

We have all been through this.
It's not that difficult. You just have to sort out which module does what. Some of them you will probably never use.
Best,
Sandra

SDL Solution Finder... Aug 19, 2008

Hello Gabriele,

We have a very effective solution finder, designed to help users fix their problems. We urge you to follow the solution finder step by step and, if your problem is not resolved, you will be given a support form to fill out. The support form will then be sent to our support team, who will get back to you as soon as possible.

To visit the solution finder please follow these instructions:

1. Please visit: https://oos.sdl.com/asp/products/ssl/account/default.asp

2. Login with your username and password

3. Go to "My Support"

4. Select “Licensing and Installation Help”

5. Select "Start" at the bottom of the page, the SDL knowledge base will now load up

6. Select Solution finder from the top menu bar

7. Select the "Download and Installation Problems" link in the left hand navigation pane

8. Answer the questions accordingly

Again, you will be given a support form to fill out if you don't find a solution.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell
SDL Support Team

Thank you Gabriele Aug 19, 2008

Thank you for your help. I checked my license and here is what I can find.
Official SDL license file for order 154787

Available licenses:
MultiTerm Desktop, Version 8.0
S-Tagger for FrameMaker, Version 8.0
S-Tagger for Interleaf, Version 8.0
Synergy Client, Version 8.0
TagEditor, Version 8.0
Japanese UI for TagEditor, Version 8.0
Translator's Workbench/SDLX, Version 8.0 Freelance
Japanese UI for Translator's Workbench, Version 8.0
WinAlign, Version 8.0 Freelance
Japanese UI for WinAlign, Version 8.0
MultiTerm Extract, Version 7.x
Japanese UI for MultiTerm Extract, Version 7.x

I have activated all the licenses I believe. I learned that error #101 has something to do with Java and I try to figure it out, but it is very technical for me.

Thank you again.
Gabriele

Java Aug 25, 2008

Hello again, why do you talk about "error #101"? Where did you see that?
If it's a java problem, try to install the lates Java platform here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Regards
Gabriel

PS. You say "file cannot be read" is it because the Term recognition is activated in Workbench and that it is pointing to a non existing multiterm base?

A well known MT Extract error #101... Aug 25, 2008

Yes, it's a Java problem but I'm afraid the solution you propose will not work.

It's a well known bug the Multiterm programmers are unable to fix from at least 7 years.
It was present in ExtraTerm 5.5 (shipped with Trados 5.5)

BTW.
The solution was thrown out from the SDL Knowledge base.
Probably they have shame to admit they are intellectually unable to fix it

The MT EXtract MUST be intialized with the Java version provided in the installation bundle but MT calls by default the newest available version.

I.e. you must uninstall all the Java stuff posterior to the Java accepted by MT Extract (in your case, 1.5.0.10 and 1.5.0.12).
Then install the 1.5.0.10 and 1.5.0.12 versions if necessary.
Run Multiterm Extract.
Now, youl'll can reinstall your the newer Java versions you need.
Don't uninstall the Java versions provided with MT.

Cheers
GG
