Software leasing? Nov 2, 2008

Hi Max,
If I understand your question correctly, you want to pay for the licence in instalments.

There are financing options for all sorts of (intangible) assets, including software. Given the investment for a Freelance version, however, I doubt whether a leasing option could be feasible, due to the fixed costs involved.

Best regards,
Ralf

Probably not Nov 2, 2008

Hi Max,
I don't think this is possible. Try to negotiate with SDL Intl. though. It will only cost you a few minutes of your time.

You might consider bundling together various needs for your professional work (other software or hardware perhaps) with a Trados license and talking to your bank about a small business loan. It would help to do some sort of business plan to back up your request. There is an article on ProZ briefly covering business plans for translators, and much more information is available online. Your local chamber of commerce organizations may even have samples you can adapt. (I used IHK templates as my basis for a German business plan for this purpose.)

You can save up for it in instalments Nov 2, 2008

Hi Max,

If you are not earning enough from translation yet to be able to buy it outright, then a good idea would be to save up for it in instalments. You can decide how much you will save up towards it per month, and save the money in an instant access savings account with a good interest rate. At the same time, you can keep an eye open for any special offers that SDL might be running, and eventually you may be able to buy it sooner. For example, if you have saved up 8 instalments out of 12 and then SDL runs a special offer, you might then be able to buy it at that stage already. It will probably be soon enough, in any case, as you only really need it once you become established, and in the meantime you can consider using a cheaper CAT tool, which will also give you some practice in using CAT tools.

Saving up for it will, in addition, be the foundation for establishing good business practice for the future, which will in due course enable you to really build up your business. You should work on raising your rates, as well.

Astrid

Authorised Resellers Nov 2, 2008

In Turkey one can by Trados in instalments. http://trados.set-soft.com/SdlPrices.aspx

You can ask it to other authorised resellers http://www.lspzone.com/en/resellers/

Current price of SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance is EUR 715, but with the rates mentioned in your profile page (EUR 0.02 per word) you need to translate 35,750 words!!
