Can one revert the direction of languages used in an already created translation memory in trados? Let us say that we have created a translation memory for the language direction English > Bulgarian... Can I somehow use it for translating in the opposite direction Bulgarian > English? Please, help!

This question has been asked and answered a number of tiimes .... Dec 7, 2008

Can I somehow use it for translating in the opposite direction Bulgarian > English? Please, help!

You need to

i) create a second TM with the opposite language pair
ii)Export the contents of the first TM and
iii) import the exported file into the second TM.

And, as the title above says, this is one of those "traditional" questions, that come up regularly like a Swiss clock. Not that I would mind answering - I can do it in sleep (g).

regards

Vito

Thank you for your answer and your time! Could you be more specific about the export and import process - or provide me with a link to the explanation if such an explanation already exists?

It just took me a couple of minutes. I did a forum search and found this for you:

http://www.proz.com/forum/sdl_trados_support/74044-tm:_how_to_switch_my_tm_from_en_da_to_da_en.html
http://www.proz.com/forum/sdl_trados_support/69604-reversing_a_tm.html#542782

As Vito said, this has been asked before, so there are more links, I just copied two of them.

Hope you find the information you need.

Additional explanation Dec 8, 2008

1. Export the contents of your original TM (EN>BUL).
2. Create a second TM with the opposite language pair (BUL>EN).
3. Import the exported file (.txt) into the second TM (BUL>EN).

1.) FILE > EXPORT... > OK > Name: (You name it) / Type: Translator's Workbench ?.x (*.txt)

2.) FILE > NEW > Source language: Bulgarian / Target language: English > Create... (button)

3.) FILE > IMPORT... > OK > Open Import File / Name: (The one you named) / Type: Translator's Workbench (*.txt)

That's it. Now you have a TM for the language direction Bulgarian > English.

Thanks everyone, great help! On a different note: this whole experience proves to me yet again the extent to which TRADOS is a user-unfriendly software... Why couldn't they just made so that a TM could be used in both directions? This simply makes no sense.

Because TMs are indexed to facilitate quick searches (right? - I'm 99% certain they are). If Trados did the indexing in both directions the TMs would swell in size and all the TM reorganizations/imports would take longer. Most of the time you don't use them in both directions so I'm fine with the way it is.
They could have made a menu option to create an inverse TM or make a TM/all TMs bidirectional but frankly there are bigger issues with trados than this.
