This is another first.

Vista - Word 2007 - Trados 8 ..

Word file 2003 translated in TE (as usual), bilingual saving is OK.
With save target I only get option : word 1997-2003

File cannot be opened.

I am baffeled. I have done loads of translations from 2007 or 2003 but never had this problem before.

Does the original file save OK? Dec 15, 2008

What when you try to do "Save target as..." on a freshly opened original file?
Does the file save properly?
If yes, so I don't know the solution.
Otherwise the file is corrupt. You might trying reparing it with the function "Open and repair" in Word, try to save as rtf, try to open in OpenOffice and save as doc/rtf or try to copy the text into a new empty file.

OLE trouble Dec 15, 2008

I understand that you nave trouble with MS Word OLE functions.
OLE (object link and exchange) receives conversion from Trados.
In my recent installation of MS Office, I have both MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007 on the same PC.
Result: My Trados Save Target As became wierd.
In your case, please try recheck installation conditions of MS Word 2003 first e.g. Trados should be installed after Word 2003.

Regards,
SL

Plain "Save" (no bilingual, no target).

Second: "Save as target..." and add any word to the file name ("translated" or "Danish")

Open this .doc file, it should be in your target language.

I'm afraid the bilingual version cannot be saved as Word (.doc) file. In this case, you should translate directly on Word.

so maybe the file is corrupt. However I have translated it all.
It does not work to save as an rtf-file due to the size. Too many photos, which would then have to be removed etc.

I have tried to save in Word 2007 and run the translation in TE from there. Still no saving.

Probably have to give up and translate directly in the word file without using Trados...just the old fashioned way. ??

Birthe

Thank you for your suggestion - but I would then have to move to the oher machine (XP / Word 2003) .. but only last week I was working normally with the same setup as now. The problem is something to do with the original file.

Error while writing breaks is well known Dec 15, 2008

Use the following Search and Replace formula:
In "Search for" enter "^b" (without quotes, of course).
In "Replace with" enter "^p^&".
Try now.

If you don't succed, try to open the file in OpenOffice and save as Word. This can be really helpful sometimes.

If the first method was successful, after you're finished go through the translated document and check the pagination, as it might have changed slightly due to what you've done with S&R.

Original file Dec 15, 2008

First try simply to do so on original file and then simply retry "Saving target as..." from the translated file. Sometimes this may work.
If not, please reopen the original file in TagEditor after S&R and do a test. Translate first few sentences in it and try to "Save target as". If it works, simply retranslate the file from TM and you should be done.

You're welcome Dec 15, 2008

But I must say you would have had this result at once, would you have told us, that the file saves empty AFTER you get the "Error while writing breaks" message.
In such case the target file saves indeed EMPTY!
But then instead of giving you other advices I would have come with the S&R method first

You live and learn Dec 15, 2008

The annoying thing remains that we will never know the various 'snares and dangers' hidden in a file to translate.
And somehow it is as if the format-related problem are harder to overcome than the linguistic ones.
My two cents in desperation of the sleepless night in front of me.

Best regards again
Birthe
