You did it, Markus
Jun 4, 2009
Congratulations, Markus. The grassroots revolution was waiting there, but you, and you only, unleashed it.
Only problem I see, that is for "a limited time". Is it SDL just yielding to the outcry and then reverting back to their usual practice?.
Or have they recognized that, as you put it, this is an essential feature for a freelancer?. If this is the case, it is essential at ANY time, isn't it?.
Still, hadn't it been for your initiative, we wouldn't have got even the "limited time" so, again,
WELL DONE, MARKUS!
In fact, they CHARGE for it - 27 EUR for "upgrading from studio 2009 to Studio 2009 plus" (that is, for the full autosuggest function).
And, have I seen somewhere in this thread that this is valid up to June 10? (I am quoting from memory, as I cannot see the thread while editing the post).

For a limited time AutoSuggest Pro included!
Jun 4, 2009
Hello,
It's included, what does that mean. Is it just for a limited time like the automated translation (one year) and will then be turned off or is it an included feature for early adopters?
Is it worth something this autosuggest feature? I tried the beta version, which never came up with a valuable suggestion.
Regards
Noe

Included in Freelance Plus version
Jun 4, 2009
The feature is "attached" to your individual license key, so if you are one of the early adopters and pay the upgrade fee ($250 for US licenses) the feature is yours to keep.
Essentially the feature is embedded in all license versions and it is a matter of whether it is turned on for your version or not. Once it is turned on, it is there to stay. At least that's how SDL support explained it to me.

Thank you Markus for the initiative, I'm sure the people at SDL changed their minds motivated by your idea. Also, thanks to everyone for all the information.
Friderike, if I'm not wrong, the price you quote is for the upgrade from SDL Trados 2007 to Studio Plus. In this link, the upgrade is for $225 for the US.

Yes, it is worth it. Although, you have to use a large TM (I think 25,000 TU's or more, but I'm not sure), in order to create a dictionary. The feature is very intuitive; in some cases, it recognizes whole phrases within the segments and it offers you a suggestion for the whole phrase. And since the dictionaries are based from your own TMs, the matches are very accurate. Termbase autosuggestions are also useful but not as much as the dictionary autosuggestions.

Thanks for your kind words I am happy to help make a difference for my peers.
Yes, if you buy the "plus" version the AutoSuggest Pro now, it's yours to keep.
I've bought it now and will leave the computer on all night to convert my main TM to the new format, it will take a couple of days maybe, but then I'll get to start using the AutoSuggest feature that I have worked/nagged for so long now
The interface in Studio is really different from Trados TagEditor/Workbench, and hopefully it can be used for translating and delivering TTX files as well since many clients want the bilinguals in TTX, at least until the majority has made the change and moved to Studio 2009 - I know everyone can't be early adopters but a boy can dream, right?

Hello Claudia,
I tried it on a 1 GB TM but not extensively. What I still don't know is if autosuggest comes up by itself with a suggestion for a subsegment match (like the not so famous automatic concordance search) or just when I start to type the beginning of the translated subsegment? Maybe I'll have to check this out before my trial period ends.
Regards
Noe

Sub-segment

You need to start typing the beginning of the sub-segment. I've been working in a medium, recurrent project, so there are a lot of repeated phrases that I'd already translated, and the autosuggestions are saving me a lot of time; besides, it's really cool. In my opinion, it works best with short 3-to-5-word phrases; but for terms, Multiterm is the best choice.
One thing though, it that Multiterm autosuggestions can't make out terms in caps. For instance, it the term is 'Procedures' and you start with a lower-cap 'p', autosuggestions won't work for that term. You can still see it in the Multiterm window.
One thing I don't know is if the Autosuggestion feature uses terms from the current project. Since the dictionaries must be populated, I don't think the process is automatic (adding new terms automatically would also be a bad idea), but using a temporal dictionary with the new translations would be nice.
Markus,
Do you need to create your TMs again? The TMs created in the beta version didn't work in the RC, so will the TM's created in the RC work in the final candidate? Do you even need to download a new installer? Sorry for all the questions, but the RC still has a few important bugs.

I have not used neither beta or RC versions so I'm fraid I can't help you with that. But, yes I would suggest downloading the final version, as there where even changes made in the first few hours after the release (8 MB bigger installer).
What I am doing now is converting a big TM into the new format, it has been 12 hours so far, and 17% done, so this will be a while. I might cancel and just try with the smaller memories for now.
