Argument Jun 9, 2009

Tomas Mosler wrote:

And that argument could be?

That you need to buy the new version because otherwise, soon enough, your software will not be compatible with the file formats your clients and colleagues work with. In other words, if you don't jump on the wagon, you will end up missing the train.

I can't see any other reason for a company to cause so much trouble to their long-standing clients by making a new version incompatible with older ones. Can you?

It looks to me as though SDL just got the wake-up call from their competitors and they are so nervous about it that they come up with licensing schemes and software functionalities that try to turn users into slaves rather than give them a better option than other similar software (which should be their main motivation the way I see it).

Ask me nicely to try out your oh-so-cool product and I might give it a try and eventually buy it. Force me into buying it and leaving everything else behind and you'll see me running in the opposite direction without ever looking back.

I can only load a certain number of termbases Jun 9, 2009

Stanislav Pokorny wrote:

Hi Astrid,
if you have previously used Trados 2007, it should be possible for you to use termbases you loaded into MT2009 in Workbench. It's working for me.

Yes, I can use the termbases if I can load them. However, it would not work any more after I loaded the first 64 termbases, and I have about 84 altogether. Since I went through them in alphabetical order, I cannot access an important one at the end of the list that has a name starting with the letter "X".

A happy adopter of Studio 2009 Jun 9, 2009

I am reading the problems you are having with Studio 2009. I have downloaded Studio 2009 very short after the webinar was over. Installing and registering it was success on the first run! If I remember the nightmare with the 2007 Suite! Then I had lots of trouble, so that I purchased a brand new hard disk and installed XP Pro, Office 2007 and the Microsoft Language Pack and then 2007 Suite to be able to work at all!

Now, last Friday, I had a project that was a nightmare and I decided to jump onto Studio 2009 due to the benefits shown during the webinar! So I did download and install it and activate following the instructions without any problem at all! What a positive surprise!

The project had to do with translating quite a few PowerPoint presentations and 2 word files. I opened the project, imported the files, all went as I am used to from using Synergy 2007. The translation of the existing TM went absolutely smooth, importing a glossary, the same! Also the Terminology database did not make any problems; I have already used it from the early access program.

Translating the new editor, resembling the SDLX editor was as wonderful as sdlx user is well aware of, to my personal opinion superior to the TagEditor! The orthography tool was very helpful but by far inferior to the quality delivered by the Microsoft Multilanguage pack. The use of the "default" orthography control setup in Office did not work in this environment. That is very sad.

What was also a disappointment was that I could not take an advantage of the AutoSuggest functionality as these demands a TM with at last 25,000 entries to work. With fewer entries the software is not willing to generate the AutoSuggest database. I think this limitation is bad. As I often have to deal with customer specific TMs I am reluctant to merge existing ones to reach the 25,000 entries, just to generate the AutoSuggest database. I guess my next try will to generate such a large TM, to have Studio 2009 generate the AutoSuggest and so this functionality available. But I need to plan carefully not to spoil the setups for customer specific operation.

My customers mostly demand to receive cleaned and uncleaned version of the translations, this was even smoother to handle within Studio 2009 as it offers the option to save target versions of whatever choice you want at a destination your choice. I never use the option to cleanup a translation as I am too worried to spoil something.

As to the installation of Studio, I use a clean hard disk with nothing else than the translation tools and XP pro on a drive named "G". I boot from "G" when I work on translations, so Studio 2009 was installed as I wanted. Those having problems with the destination of the installation of Studio 2009; spend those 80.- € for 1TByte HD and have a clean setup for your work.

I do have a service agreement with SDL and it is worth every penny of it! Not just getting the update as part of the service, but the chance to talk 24/6 to a specialist within 5 minutes of setting up a case. When it is outside the operating hours in Germany I call UK or USA or East Asia and always there is a friendly and supportive person on the other end of the line. But what really has impressed me. Once on the problems I had during my upgrade to 2007 Suite the support people in Germany kept a case open without responding. I had found a work around with the support by phone so I was not in an urgently need for the solution of this case anymore. What was really the best I ever have seen in support was a call I received from a SDL supervising person in the USA contacting me to ask what was going on with this case. Have you ever seen a support organization noticing an open issue and contacting you proactively? I had never before seen this! So guess what, I am extending my agreement!

I want to point out that I am a freelancer in Gemany with the ProZ.com ID Hellmut1956 and not in any way paid or promoted by SDL. I just believe I need to say here that I have a very positive story to tell and that this is also part of the truth of this product update launch! You are welcome to contact me as I am happy to have been allowed to contact some of you for support before!

Thank you for the reminder about the webinars Jun 9, 2009

I believe there is a Studio 2009 webinar tomorrow morning, and I had meant to attend it, but had forgotten, after being out of the office today. Many thanks for the reminder. I will register right away, and hopefully that will throw some light on the software.

Thanks for your help, Kim Jun 9, 2009

kimjasper wrote:

Elke,

Here is a what may be a quick fix for your problem: Export the TM from Trados Suite in TMX format and import it in Trados Studio. That has worked for me every time when I had the beta test version running.

If you can, I would recommend that you install Trados Suite on a secondary computer so you can fall back if you get issues (technical or understanding-related - both are perfectly valid with such a big change in architecture and function).

Hope it helps

Kim

PS: With regards to support you shold be able to log a case, and as I recall it you can request to be contacted via phone if you wish. Usually the reaction is quite prompt (based on the severity you assign to the problem). Maybe you did not receive the logon info for your support account yet - try to phone your local SDL office and ask.

I got the support issue resolved. I have a page now where I can log a case.

As for the software itself, I realise I have to do quite a lot of experimenting yet.

Yes, I had just read that thread Jun 9, 2009

Thanks for pointing it out, Tomas. However, I still have an individual problem, that I returned a licence and it did not register as having being returned. I believe it is because it was a replacement licence for one that was lost, along with a computer, when my computer broke last year and I had to buy a new one. I guess SDL will sort out the problem soon now.

Good to know! Jun 10, 2009

Good morning Astrid,

thanks for mentioning this. I'm prepared for potential issues, as for one I have a replacement, too. I have returned it many times since the "disaster" with no problems at all, but perhaps the updated licensing opened a new can of worms... ready for it

Giuliana
