Studio 2009 under Parallels

Has anyone managed to get Studio 2009 to run under Parallels?

After a couple of hours cracking the labyrinthine licensing procedure my shiny new software won't start on my iMac running Windows XP uder Parallels 4.0. It says

Sdl.TranslationStudio.Api.ProjectManagement.IprojectMangementService can't be started

it offers an error file called sdlerror-2009615-18h40m11s.sdlerror.xml and leaves me there twiddling my thumbs and regretting the decision to buy an update.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. It always behaves in exactly the same way and won't run.

I will have to go back to Trados 2007, but I had to remove Multiterm 2007 to be able to install at all, so now I have no MultiTerm. Great, thanks a bunch, I really got a good buy there, I spent money and now have less functionality than before.

I would really appreciate any help.

Runs (albeit slowly) on Parallels 3 Jun 15, 2009

It might be worth sending the error log to SDL support to confirm whether the error is caused by the virtual Windows environment or if it is SDL related, bearing in mind that if it is Parallels related, you will be on your own.

Did you activate your software online or are you using a locale license file ? Have you tried restarting your virtual machine ?

Personally, I am using it on Parallels Build 3214.

So far, the issues I can report is the fact that the software doesn't remember the activation code and it can't handle file path that links to a folder in the Mac file system (invalid URI error).

The other general comment I would make after the first couple of days of usage is that SDL Trados Studio 2009 is more demanding in terms of resources than SDL Trados 2007 and it pushes the virtual machine to its limits.

disable shared folders Jun 16, 2009

Hi Kim, I had the same problem and solved it by deactivating the shared folders, shared profile, shared applications. To do so, go to "Virtual Machine>Configure" and untick the respective boxes.

This has to do with the SDL Trados installer inability (restriction) of installing in a drive other C:

hope it helps,
Jorge

Thanks Jun 16, 2009

Thanks guys.

Jorge was quite right, if I disable the box that says use Mac OS X in Windows (Under folders) then the application will start. Many thanks Jorge!

The consequence of this is however, that all of my legacy files which are carefully organised under the Mac OS disappear. Now I can either try and move them all to live exclusively under Windows XP which I guess would be quite hard work, or I abandon Studio 2009 until they offer a fix for this. Which is my preferred course of action. As a freelance translator, I have to do "useful" i.e. paid for work and not prat about for days resolving quite unnecessary IT problems caused by inadequate regression testing in the Trados software development department.

The old version still works OK, even with Parallels path names, so I will stick with that until there is a clear benefit from moving on.

One possible workaround Jun 17, 2009

You should be able to 'share' the files to yourself over the local network. Not sure if this will work if the machine is disconnected from a physical network but it works fine for me on my iMac when I have the network cable plugged in.

Set up "windows" file sharing on your Mac and share the desired folder. Then, go to Windows and type \\your_mac_networkname\your_desired_share. It should prompt for a userid/password. Enter your Mac userid/password and you should be able to browse everything. You can map a drive letter to this as well if you like.

Final solution Jun 17, 2009

I have now got a stable solution. This is what worked for me -

1. Under the Parallels 4.0 Virtual Machine menu choose Configuration

2. Uncheck Use Mac OS-X folders in Windows

3. Check User-defined Mac OS X folder

4. Make an entry in the table underneath that to choose which part of the Mac file system to use.

5. Check the option to assign a a drive letter.

6. Restart Windows

On my computer the drive letter turned out to be Z:

7. From there (Z:) I could navigate my way down to my legacy folders to keep access to my old data.

Windows produces lots of winge messages about not being able to find drives which you can just ignore.

By testing this first on my laptop I also found that my SDL Trados Studio 2009 Freelance Plus license allows me to have both my main iMac and the 13" MacBook Pro run the software without having to return licenses. Which is a comforting thought, in case one of them dies.

Thanks very much for the support everyone offered. I hope this helps anyone else confronted with the same problems.

Any attempts with Parallels 5? Nov 10, 2009

Thanks for the input, it has helped a lot. I hope one of these days "they" stop avoiding helping Mac users, and denying the fact that there are lagging behind by sticking with Windows-only software.

In any event... have any of you tried all this with the brand new Parallels 5, XP and Snow Leopard?

Same issue with Parallels 5 Dec 1, 2009

Benjamin,
I've just installed Parallels 5, running XP and Studio 2009- I had the exact same error messages previously cited here and the same solution (disabling shared files worked to solve it). I am a new user, so I don't have the fileshare issue that Kim had.

The most maddening part was the SDL Trados support network, which I could barely find my way through and then was told,

"The use of SDL applications on the Mac is not officially supported and we may not always be able to help assist in configuring your Mac to make SDL software work."

It was not so clearly stated when I was a potential buyer.

Yes. I have done one job now after updating everything and it all seems to work OK. They seem to have fixed the memory leak in the initial version of Studio.

I must add, that Multiterm 5 is now completely dead and I have found no way to reinvigorate it, although Translator's workbench and the tag editor still work. Something has also died in Word and if someone asks me for a 2-language Word translation, it is a real test of your nerves, and I am getting whinges about macros every time I start Word, whether I want to translate anything or not...

Why doesn't SDL make a mac version of their software? Dec 23, 2009

It seems ridiculous that with the popularity of macs today they would not offer a mac-supported version of their software. Providers of professional software in most other industries offer a mac version- why not trados? Also felt a little duped that this fact was not provided readily by the company before I made the purchase. A little disclosure please!!!

Please, Jonathan - don't draw the devil on the wall, as we say in German. There are enough issues with SDL software on Windows workstations, we do not need a Mac version of Studio 2009 to make things even worse. And yes, SDL Trados make no secret about the fact that their software is not supported directly by Mac workstations - it has never been! As a matter of fact, we can count Mac-compatible TEnT with nearly the fingers of one hand, hence my choice of a Mac-based TEnT working with open-source formats and also accepting .TTX files...

Purchasing a MAC? Jan 16, 2010

Hi everyone.

This is a very informative topic.
But after reading it, I must now think twice about purchasing a MACstation although they are much better than all of the rubbish being produced by Microsoft.

Does anyone also happen to know if Across runs on an Appel?
