Hi HHL
Thanks for the feedback. I'm in the middle of a large project with multiple PowerPoint files, so it would have been perfect to do it on the new version. I persevered longer than I should have done, until the looming prospect of a missed deadline and a flurry of six crashes inside half an hour drove me to admit defeat. So, I went back to my old Trados, did the work, made the deadline, and the next deadline, and suffered no crashes at all. Deliver us from innovation!
But seriously, can you imagine the outrage if any of us, as professional translators, delivered a piece of translation that was an error laden first draft like this piece of s**tware? Nobody would ever employ us again. And yet they delivered this under the slogan "Brand matters"!
OK, rant over. Unfortunately, Studio 2009 is going to be some undisturbed space on my hard drive until it gets some serious fixing.

...countless random crashes
Jul 30, 2009
@Mathhew
Couldn't agree more with you. I have now also switched back to 2007. The constant crashing is driving me crazy.
When I was thinking about upgrading to 2009, I spoke to one of the friendly sales reps at SDL and inquired whether it would be possible to test the new software. You know, 30-day trial or something like that.
This was of course not possible. And now we all know why!

Creating projects with 1 missing value crashes Studio
Jul 30, 2009
I have a Deja Vu feeling about reporting this bug, but it's still really annoying. If a project has two TMs and at the time the project is created, one of the values is missing, Studio crashes.
For instance, I just spent about 10 minutes creating a new project but when I got to the Update option, the last setting was missing a value (TM#1 had Client:Client1, TM#2 didn't), I actually had misspelled the name of the client, so Studio crashed. I almost made it 2 weeks without Studio crashing.

Is there a ZOOM feature SDL TRADOS 2009?
Jul 31, 2009
I've searched through various posts and found that I'm probably only scratching the surface as far as issues / problems. Is there a zoom feature? If there is, I haven't found it and it must not be called "zoom" because a search of the help files turned up nothing. This seems like a very basic / common item to have and I can't figure out why it's been removed.
Thanks,

What do you mean by zoom?
Jul 31, 2009
You mean a magnifying glass feature? I don't think that exists. If you just want to make the font larger, go to Options>Editor>Font Adaptation and choose the font size.

Yes, that's the ticket
Jul 31, 2009
Thanks, Claudia. That's exactly what I want to do. I'd prefer a magnifying glass or drop down ZOOM, however, that's a suggestion for the TRADOS developers. Funny, it was there in the Standard tool bar in Tag Editor just a version ago...
Thanks again, Claudia.
Saludos.

I almost made it 2 weeks without Studio crashing
Jul 31, 2009
Did you actually use Studio during that time?
I was on a short vacation (2 days), and Studio didn't crash a single time;-)
cheers,
Tapsa

SDL Support sent me a beta version months before the release...

I would like to put a favorable experience here.
Two months before Studio's launch I contacted SDL Support about the possibility of trying a Beta version, explaining I was using Trados on both 32- and 64-bit Windows XP, Vista and the Beta of Windows 7 for some time, the production machine running Trados 2007 under Vista 64-bit.
I pondered that perhaps I could be of some help. I was immediately (next day) sent a Beta version of Studio along with a temporary license. They didn't ask me anything, on the contrary, I bothered them all the time well after launch... Since then I have received all support I could reasonably ask for.

Hi Edric
I was also a Beta tester and must say I have always been satisfied with the support I received from SDL. Everybody I have dealt with at SDL has always been very helpful and friendly.
However, I think it is understandable that a lot of people are somewhat frustrated about the constant crashing problem. It is normal for new software to have the odd bug, but I think one can normally expect a final release to perform its core functions in a reliable manner. This, unfortunately, is not the case and I can only hope the service pack will solve this very annoying problem.

Tag management
Aug 1, 2009
In my case, provided i had all of the above, except the too frequent crashes, i have another annoying problem.
I start a big project for a motorcycle company. It's overall about 100.000 words. I begin to work and every single line confirmed reveals tag issues (Yellow sign with exclamation point on it stating all problems). Most times the problem also shows copying source into target. In short, many tags are not copied and only part of them are. Useless trying to copy them.....there is no way to do it.
Using the quickinsert function too proves pretty unfriendly.
I wonder...is that me doing wrong or that is the nth bug? I only know that in TagEditor i never had these problems while now my company called me back to complain about all those Tag problems (Missing tags mostly....)
I try to fix the issue....re-copy/paste the tags...and they still don't paste. Same happens with some numerical values (Like MY '09-'10 that although the same in source and target is considered as wrong in target, despite me changing it, copying pasting it etc....). In other cases i have seen occasions in which the amendments performed on tags and number weren't saved and running a further VERIFY scan the issues were still there.
Has anyone ever experienced this issue?

Hi Lutz
I agree with you, but since old times with IBM 1130 and Apple II running CP/M, I know how hard it is to hit the goal. I cannot recall how many versions of famous and popular software, now thriving on the market, were plagued with bugs for years and years until achieving a stable and consistent release.
For a brief time I saw their efforts to solve problems, during Beta: trying a new patch, crashing the application, capturing the error message and debugging details, sending to SDL, another patch coming back with a "now it should work!", crashing again, next day another one "now it will do!", until it really did! One have to admit that, after those bugs are ironed out and some functions become more efficient, Studio will be fantastic to use.
Unfortunately (and fortunately also), the PC platform accepts all kinds of combinations and configurations, and running QA on new releases is a nightmare nowadays. If we were using Apple, things would be simpler, I guess, but...
No "brown nosing" here, I have purchased Studio like anyone...
Cheers
Edric

Another related issue about working with multiple TMs
Aug 3, 2009
Update fields
If a project is started without TMs (in order to avoid the problem described above: 'Creating projects with 1 missing value crashes Studio') and then the TMs are added after the project is created, the following happens:
If the project is based on a template, adding a TM manually from Project settings, imports the Update values automatically. So if the second TM doesn't have such value, it creates a window-handling error and the value can't be removed. The solution is to add the TM, manually, remove the 'update values', adding the second TM, and set the new values for the particular project.
Please, add a way to import/export fields and values directly to the TMs and projects because it takes forever.

Bad project template handling
Aug 4, 2009
Hi there!
I've wasted my time creating project templates and noticed that changes made to one template propagates to the others... This problem seems to apply only to file types.
Anyone having troubles with project templates? Any workaround?

Segment length verification problem

Hi again!
Segment length verification doesn't seem to work when you don't define anything in the "Only segments in which are in the following context will be checked (one per line)" list.

Double click, double click, crash
Aug 4, 2009
I have had my share of 2009 crashes, mainly due to "file not found" errors and network paths not being properly supported. I had to adopt a whole new routine to avoid those, but at least they were almost under control.
Today a crash occured when I accidently double-clicked the application bar twice in a row (first maximizing, then un-maximizing Studio). I got the "not responding" message, which did not go away even after a long wait.
All in all I decided to go back to 2007 for now.
BTW
For 800 EUR, is it too much to ask for a practical, well structured user guide that is written with a translator in mind? Maybe one of the "hundreds" of millions invested in the development of Studio 2009 could have been spent there.
