Multiterm 2009 - Editing and adding terms is slow

Uninstalling JRE 1.5.0_10 didn't solve the problem for me neither. It still takes way, way too long to add any term.

If anybody has managed to get it to work properly, I'd love to know too which versions of Java are exactly installed on your computer.
Thanks in advance for any help because I use MultiTerm a lot and it has become useless for me since the upgrade!

Java settings Jul 4

Bjørnar, Francoise, by no means 10 seconds is normal. The first time after Studio is opened, it takes about that or even more, but by the second time a term is added, the waiting time is almost null. I use F11 to add the terms and F12 to save them and adding a term takes probably less than 2 seconds. Since I have the Termbase Viewer set to auto-hide, after highlighting both terms (source and target), I move the cursor over the space the Termbase Viewer will pop-up (so the Viewer remains open) and, after adding the terms, wating for the Viewer to auto-hide (probably 3 or 4 seconds) takes longer than adding the terms.

I took some screenshots of my settings. Since I still get some Java errors (see this thread), although they're usually fixed by re-starting Studio, I don't know if they're the ideal settings, but at least using Multiterm from Studio is not slow. All the instructions are in the Talisma page by the way. In Vista, Java is accessed from the Control Panel.

1. Java Applet Runtime Parameters. The value must be set to half the capacity of the RAM (see Gareth's post in the link above.)

2. Disable next-generation Java plug-in

3. Java versions. Although I don't know if I need to remove the last two (see Pavel comment on the link above)

Disabling next-generation Java plug-in worked!!! Jul 4

Disabling next-generation Java plug-in did the trick for me! It seems to matter less what Java versions are installed - currently I only have 1.6.0_13.

I am back to practically zero waiting time. Thank you very much, Claudia, for sharing your settings with us. I did read the other thread that you are referring to, but was not aware of its connection to my problem.

I have now remapped the Add New Term Key to F12, so that I can add a term with a "double click" on F12 Btw. F6 for toggling between source and target segments also comes in handy if you want to speed up the adding term process.

Trados surely makes me discover corners of my computer that I didn't know existed...

Same here! Jul 6

Thanks a lot, it seems to work for me too, even after a restart! Last time everything looked better for a short while too after I uninstalled some of the old Java versions, but next time I started my PC, it was unacceptably slow again - this time it's still OK.

I don't use MultiTerm together with Studio since I'm still working with Trados 2007 (I really don't like Studio so far, even if AutoSuggest is a great feature), so I use MultiTerm as a standalone application and together with Word. Adding terms from Word was not particularly slow, but editing the entries in MT was terrible.

Thanks again for your help, Claudia, it's very appreciated!

Which Java versions? Jul 6

Francoise P. and Bjørnar Magnussen: which versions of Java do you have installed (all of them)? Did you copy Claudia's -xms memory settings also?

My installation, which was running 1.6.0_14 only, was extremely slow but didn't crash. (It was working fast for only about 1 boot cycle, I think). As soon as I disabled the Java plugin, per Claudia's descripion, I got the 'java cannot be loaded / multiple java' error again. I think I'm going to spend another evening trying to fix this.

On my computer I have uninstalled everything Java-ish except "Java(TM) 6 Update 13". And disabled the next-generation Java plug-in.

I got a Java related error once which disappeared when I restarted the computer.

Compatibily issues Trados 2007 - 2009 Jul 7

I need both versions, Trados 2007 and Studio 2009, running on my PC but I've compatibility problems with Multiterm 2009 and Workbench/Studio. Have you got Multiterm 2009 working properly with Workbench and Studio (i.e. not just as a standalone application)? How did you do it?

The adding term functionality of Multiterm 2009 should be working with with both a) T2009 Studio and also with b) T2007 Workbench when you use with Word, but not c) T2007 Workbench when you use it with TagEditor.

For assistance, please see other treads in this forum (this tread is about slow editing/adding terms).
