Any chance of translating the Transit files in Trados and converting it back?

It does not tell you to open the "RUS" file
Feb 20, 2010
It say "open any source file (ie DEU)" and then "open any target file (ie RUS)".
But before you do that you MUST receive the project in Satellite.
Then open any source file, then any target file.

Conversion from Transit to trados and back
Feb 25, 2010
Thanks Jerzy
I must say I am totally unexperted in software matters, that´s why I have to ask everything in detail. I did the conversion to trados and got 2 files in the segmented:
a .mtx file and a adobe acrobat language resource file. How do I have to proceed now?
I work with SDL Trados Studio 2009 and Transit XV and trados doesn´t open neither of these files. Am I right to suppose they should be bilingual segmented files? Do I have to do anything else before opening?
Thanks for your help
Annette

What is Adobe Language Ressources file?
Feb 25, 2010
What you should have got is a file with the ending corresponding to your target language and one backup file of it. You are expected to translate the language file in Word and LEAVE the backup where it is, as it will be used later.

Adobe Language Resources
Feb 25, 2010
Hello Annette and Jerzy,
the supposed "Adobe Resource File" (can't remember the file extension) is in fact a Transit file which uses the same extension as Adobe Resource Files. If you have Adobe products installed, this file extension is registered for Adobe, not for Transit.
You should be able to open it in Notepad from any file manager such as Total Commander.

Is it really worth it?
Feb 25, 2010
Sorry, but I can't but ask why going thru so many unknown steps instead of translating directly in Transit? From a reader point of view, it does look as a waste of time, especially, if you are not familiar with the process. Transit isn't that bad, a few shortcuts to learn before starting to translate, and definitely a translation in Transit is much safer (no need to worry that the file might not be imported back) and a time-saver compared to all these steps. Or your deadline is really comfortable;-)

If you only knew...

Translating in Satellite can be pretty tedious, especially since there is no spellcheck in the free version and the dictionary seems to be broken as well. Converting a large project to Trados would actually save time...

Another solution
Feb 26, 2010
Hello,
We also have a simple internal tool that converts Transit Satellite 3.0 files to DOC or TTX, including all tags, and back converts the files upon translation, but it is not available as a commercial or free product. It is been in use since 2007 though, so it is now tested thoroughly.
We might be able to help you with the conversion of any current job. Please send me a message through the profile, if you are interested in learning more about the tool or need our help with conversion of any current job. It should be noted though, as absciarretta pointed out above, that the conversion process is indeed feasible mainly for larger jobs.
