Hi all,
I just realized that Indesign CS5 cannot export as INX anymore.
I understand that Trados Studio 2009 is compatible and can handle IDML.
But what about users on older Trados versions?
Have any of you tried it, and did you have to apply any workarounds (ie downsave to INX in CS4 or earlier)?
Or have you been successful just running the XML tag settings wizards to create an .ini file for IDML?
Any other CAT tools that are known good with IDML?

CS4 IDML
May 11, 2010
AFAIK, SDL Trados Studio 2009 IDML filter supports only CS4 IDML files. SDL may develop a new filter or update the existing one.
And as for the older versions of Trados, I think TagEditor can be used.

Coming soon..
May 11, 2010
Hi Jan,
As Selcuk suggested we will be coming out with this very soon. Also correctly stated, TagEditor cannot be used.
I sometimes wonder whether Selcuk is really a closet SDL Trados fan
Regards
Paul

I don't have any time to test it, but in my opinion TagEditor can be used. Change the file extension from idml to zip, decompress the file and translate the stories with TagEditor (xml filter).

Honestly, I am not! Any changes in MultiTerm?

Using TagEditor for IDML

Hi Selcuk,
In the way you describe, I'm also sure it could be done as long as you know what you are doing; I guess in the same way you could do docx, xslx etc. with any tool capable of working with xml.
I was really referring to a specific filter to take all the work out of the workaround and to provide peripheral information to assist the translator whilst working in the editor. That will not be provided for TagEditor.
Nice workaround though, but I guess only one for people comfortable with what they are doing like your good self.
Kind regards
Paul

Selcuk, you're a genius! Haven't tried this yet, but I will.
So, using the XML filter, which TagEditor versions would you figure it works with?
As far back as Trados 6.5?
Did anyone else try this? Post your results here...

Hi, this conversation was very useful for me. I created the hereunder Trados 2009 XML filter. This allows me to translate the content by means of the Tag Editor.

How to apply the IDML filter in Trados TagEditor
Dec 3, 2010
Thanks Maurice
Now for the non-experts: what do I do with this filter? Make an ini file and use it as Tag Settings?
Any help would be very welcome. I would like to share work with a colleague who only has Trados 2007, but it's all in InDesign CS4 format.

Save as INI
Dec 3, 2010
Hello Marinus,
I guess you can simply copy the settings to the Notepad and save the file as a "filename.INI". I would prefer two changes in the above XML settings:
KeepLineBreaks=Yes
KeepLineBreaksAfterPunctuation=Yes

For some reason that doesn't work..

Should I use another ini filter as template, maybe?
I'm working with Trados 2007 SP2 in Win 7 64 bit and the file is InDesisgn CS5 IDML.
This is what I get:
and then:
Thanks, Stanislav
Have a good weekend!

I would start from scratch
Dec 5, 2010
Hello Marinus,
in this case, I would start from scratch, i.e. creating a completely new INI file for IDML. It shouldn't be too much of a trouble, but why would you want to do this if you have Studio that features the corresponding SDLFILETYPE...?

Older version CAT tool incompatibility
Dec 6, 2010
Basically I want to enable colleagues that have older versions of Trados to work with IDML. I suppose there is the option of exporting the same InDesign file in the INX format, but these files are larger and cause more problems when restoring to InDesign, or so I hear.
That's the dilemma.

True
Dec 6, 2010
Hello Marinus,
what you say is definitely true. I will try to create an INI, but only as soon as I have enough time, which will be definitely no sooner than January 2011.

SDL Trados 2007 can't handle IDML..
Dec 27, 2010
..but CafeTran can (www.cafetran.republika.pl). And it does it a lot better better than SDL Studio even. Once more a low-budget CAT tool outshines the Rolls Royce of CAT tools.
