To join segments in Trados Studio... Jun 12, 2010

Hello.
To join segments in Trados Studio, mark segments by clickinig on the number that you have on the right of a segment you want to join (use Ctrl to mark more than one), then right-click, choose "merge segments". Remember, that if you have "empty" enters left in source segments Trados Studio will not allow you to join them. Moreover, you may join the segments that follow one another. You can't join for example segment nr 2 and 5 but nr 2 and 3 or 2 and 3 and 4. And so on.

Doesn't work ! Jun 12, 2010

what do you mean by empty enters ?

It doesn't work ! I tried it on empty segments and on translated segments ! Any explanation ? Am I missing a setting ? Is it because I'm working on ttx ?

Try it like this. Jun 12, 2010

Hi Mohamed,

Here's a step by step with a TTX file (same as for any file).

1. Click on the first segment as shown so it becomes selected.

2. Now hold the ctrl key and click on the second one so that it becomes yellow indicating that it is also selected.

3. Right click on either the first one or the second one and select Merge Segments.

4. Now you can see segment 14 has been merged to segment 13.

The exception to this is if you try to merge across segments with a paragraph boundary. In these cases the Merge Command will be greyed out.

Regards

Paul

The segments are of the same paragraph...

Can you give me the document (with a brief description of what segments you are trying to merge) or add a screenshot to the post?

Thanks

Paul

Sorry, but I can't give you the document as it's sensitive client information...

Well... Jun 12, 2010

Can you take the section of the document you have this problem with, change the text, and then just share that with me?

Regards

Paul

Paragraph boundary Jun 13, 2010

I can merge this segmented sentence. With this segmented sentence. But I couldn't merge.

This one.

The third and fourth segmented sentences are seperated by a paragraph boundary. This is a little simplified and many structures within a document can cause a paragraph boundary but hopefully you will get the idea.

You can see this represented in the far right hand column of the editor and if you can screenshot just the column on the right with the Document Structure Information then we can see whether this is the cause of your problem.

Is there a way to go past this limitation ?

I just sent you a file, can you take a look at segments 338 and 339 I can't merge them and I don't see any paragraph boundary there...

segmentation rules Jun 13, 2010

I had the same problem with merging segments, that's why I switched to memoQ and have no problems. I really wanted to try and work in Studio but I got stuck at the second segment and never managed to continue my work because I could not merge the segments.

I guess Mohamed's and my problem could be solved by changing segmentation rules. Please tell us how.

Here's detailed information to help you answer:
1) I imported .doc file
2) RU-EN Translation
3) The sentence "В п. 1 следует включить название..." was broken into two segments:
- "В п."
- "1 следует включить название..."

My blog post on this problem (in Russian): http://www.wordhord.com/2010/04/moj-neudachnyj-opyt-s-sdl-studio-2009-i-ochen-netochnye-sovpadeniya/

Thanks!

I specified all the details, including the sentence broken into two segments, for SDL to be able to answer. I guess the problem could be solved by changing segmentation rules - I couldn't find out how.
