If I look at the languages (EN>ES/ES>EN, 1x Chinese), it seems to me, as if the problem could be a language-specific one. Could that be? Perhaps any specific issue relating to the keyboard decode? - This is just a thought.
I myself have no problems at all with Studio 2011, and my environment is quite demanding: Generally about 10-15 open applications (among them Firefox with 8-20 open pages/tabs - currently eating 430 MB of physical memory, Outlook2000 with about 10 open databases, 3-5 open - bigger - Excel tables, various dictionaries like DUDEN libraries, multi-protocol Instant Messengers with skype/IRC/AIM etc, Word,...); background tasks like AntiVirus, PhraseExpress, Hardcopy, Printer services, LION/LEO, ZoneAlarm and more; plus, Studio uses 2-4 large Termbases with multiple 1000's of entries each, and up to 4/5 concurrent TMs with 10,000's of TUs and one with 200k+ TUs - where all TMs and Termbases are not on the local system but on a mapped network drive (a Linux server) (i.e. each compare/search needs to run over the network!). Currently I use Windows XP/32 bit. 4 GB RAM, quadcore CPU. - And there are no typing delays.
This changes completely, if I use the "SDL T-Window for Clipboard" App - this tool does weird things, but still I need it sometimes ...

TRADOS 2011 operating at very, very low speeds

Dear All,
Its really an interesting topic.. which also eats all our translation time.
I have been using Trados 7 for the past four years, and when I use the "Workbench" for translation, I use to type at an amazing speed (I am a high speed typist).
At the same time, when I use the Tag Editor for all those html, xml, excel, power point, indesign and publisher files, all the problem you have discussed here happened.
In Trados 2007 - Tag Editor, when I type and complete a sentence, then the letters will start appearing one by one for the next two minutes (in a bigger file).
What I'm coming to point out is:
Trados 2011 and Wordfast pro are looking similar.
If you download wordfast pro and type using an unicode font, it will take the whole day to type a 1000 word.
If the problem is the same in Trados Studio 2011, it is not the problem at our system or memory (RAM), it is with the make of Trados Studio 2011.
It must be taken care of by the SDL People..

So I started working on a 13k word TTX document with a termbase (1300 entries).
Part of the document is already translated and present in the TM, so Studio context-matches through ~20 segments in a row. Of course, this is working slow with 1 to 3 seconds of transition between segments (imho, this transition time is ridiculous having in mind the power of modern computers).
However the funniest part is that when it stops at the segment that was not translated previously, the contents in Term Recognition keep changing (!) for another ~30 seconds. It seems like the term search is lagging behind the actual segment matching and it takes a lot (also please have in mind, that when Studio matches the segment automatically and goes to the next segment, the term search is not needed at all).
Also, if I try to copy all source to target (about 3000 segments), this takes about 5 mins. If I want to undo this, this takes another 5 mins, and Studio crashes in the end.
It takes 5 minutes to COPY 3k segments. No DB queries are needed here at all. So if just a copying task takes this amount of CPU time, it's not surprising at all, that going from one translation segment to another provides enough time for a smoking break, like we discussed here before.
This looks like anti-programming, dear SDL.

Same problem with me on an i3, 8GB RAM machine. I can literally play a computer game while studio works through the segment I've typed.
Will try a Java update, but don't think it'll change anything.
And there is virtually NOTHING running in the backgroud apart from system processes!

I'm having the same problem on an i5, 16GB RAM. CPU usage is around 2% when I'm doing nothing. When I'm entering or deleting multiple characters in the target segment, Studio CPU usage goes up to around 30%. The characters entered don't show up individually, only after I stop using the keyboard. Major annoyance, since I'm a very fast typer.

I bought a TRADOS 2011 license a couple weeks ago.
It runs fine on my computer, unless I try to translate a large file.
I'm working on a 8 mb TTX file and I'm having the same problems other posters here are having.
I'm using a quad core 2.0 gigahertz i7 with 8 Gbytes of RAM running Windows 7 and I have no problems with viruses or spyware or the like. Everything else runs very fast on this computer. Very little processing power is used at once, and never more than 40% of RAM.
It just seems that TRADOS 2011 has problems with very large files.
Is there a way to split a ttx file up and then recombine it?
Otherwise it looks like I will have to switch back to the 2007 version for this project. Shame, I quite like the 2011 interface.
I also get the spinning blue wheels whenever I use a right-click function.
BTW I'm translating Japanese to English FWIW.

1. The interface has turned to SDLX, which is user-friendly at all.
2. You can hardly find out the difference between new sentence and original segment in a TM.
3. It takes a long time to launch and runs quite slowly like a fat pig.

FWIW, I'm also experiencing a slowness problem with Studio 2011. The further I get through my 25 page document, the slower it seems to be getting. I too am operating on a quad core computer with plenty of RAM and by far the biggest user of resources is Studio. I am contemplating reverting to 2009 until they get this sorted out. A bit of a shame really.
Also, in case anyone at SDL is listening, there is a problem with placeable recognition in Hebrew documents. The placeables are recognized in the correct order, but not marked in the source fields in the correct order - this is confusing and it would be good if it could be rectified.
I should also add that autopropagation is painfully slow as well.

Trados 2011 slow

I am having this problem as well. I am having it with both the trial version I have on my desktop and the Starter Edition of Trados Studio 2011 that I have on my laptop. The desktop is a very old computer and I would understand it being a bit slow, but the laptop is brand new and everything else on it runs like a dream. Has anyone had any success solving this? It's completely absurd, I'd go faster translating with pen and paper.

Could antivirus be a part of the problem?

An antivirus that checks files in real-time on opening/saving can considerably slow down things. Could you try running with the antivirus temporarily disabled, if you have one?

I've installed the SP1 and there are still no changes at all. The problems are completely the same. Even with a 3000 word TTX file it works horribly slow. Transition between 100% matched segments can take up to 20 seconds, and a typing lag occurs after 10-90 minutes of work.

Exactly! I see this problem all the time with large files and Autopropagation. Studio should be programmed in a way so as NOT to go through the Term Recognition for each segment it autopropagates.
Also, another thing causing a lot of waiting time is the Projects View. If you have many projects in the projects view, even ones set to "completed", Studio seems to check all the TB and TM links (and shows an error if one is broken) for all or the projects. This can take quite a while (if you have activated many TBs and TMs per project) until you can finally open your current project. The only solution here, seems to be, to remove as many projects as possible from the Projects View once you have completed them, but this reduces the functionality if you want to create new projects based on previous ones.
So, quite some scope for "productivity improvements" by SDL!
