Trados Character Corruption

Several refinements in the area of Unicode support and robustness have been implemented in this release. Character corruption should no longer occur when translating Word or tagged documents using characters from different character sets and codepages, including special Unicode characters outside the default codepages supported by Windows. To fully benefit from this enhancement, TRADOS recommends you remove support for any non-Western languages you do not work with from both the Windows Regional Options and the Microsoft Office Language Settings. TRADOS highly recommends you only use the languages that you are translating into and from in both Windows and Word. Having the Microsoft Office Language Settings set to more than one non-Western language at a time results in corrupted characters or font changes
Applies to: Translator's Workbench 3/TagEditor, Translator's Workbench 5/5.5, Translator's Workbench 6
Environment: MS Word 2000, MS Word XP (2002)
SYMPTOMS
When translating from a Western to a non-Western language using Microsoft Word, non-Western characters may appear corrupted or the translation memory fonts may not be respected in Word on actions such as Open/Get or Set/Close.
EXPLANATION
This is because there is more than one non-Western language enabled within the Microsoft Office Language Settings.
To prevent such corruption of characters or font changes when translating, you must ensure that only those languages necessary for translation are enabled at any one time, especially when one of the languages is a non-Western language.
STEPS
In order to avoid such situations, follow the steps below:
1. From the Start menu go to Programs -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Microsoft Office Language Settings. This will open the Microsoft Office Language Settings dialog box.
2. On the right hand side of this dialog there is a list of the currently enabled languages for editing.
3. Make sure that there is only one non-Western language enabled at a time in this list and click OK.
You should now be able to translate into or from this language without any character corruption.



Troubleshoot Corruption and Directionality Issues in Word Documents
Applies to: Translator's Workbench 6
Environment: MS Word 2000, MS Word 2003, MS Word XP (2002)
OS: Windows 2000, Windows XP
SYMPTOMS
You are translating to/from e.g. Japanese and English, but Arabic language characteristics appear in the Word document, causing character corruption or other related issues.
EXPLANATION
Arabic language support has been selected in the Regional Options on your Windows machine. This causes Arabic support to be included in the Microsoft Office Language Settings. When this is selected Word's automatic language detection feature misinterprets various characters as being Arabic. This causes unwanted character formatting and directional features to appear in the document.
STEPS
1. Remove support for the non-used language in the Windows Regional Options General tab and the Microsoft Office Language Settings. It is highly recommended to only use the languages that you are translating into and from in both Windows and Word. If language coding still appears in any documents after making these changes, save the documents to .rtf format, delete the original .doc file, and then save the .rtf file as .doc. This will restore the document to only have the languages you require.
