This is probably a question with a painfully obvious answer, but is there a good way to count the source characters in a large bilingual file? I have to proofread some existing bilingual files and bill by the number of source characters, rather than the target words. Thanks.

If you have Trados

you could analyse the file, using an empty TM with source and target language. Trados counts only source in such case.
