Often pressing "copy source" instead of 'Save/close" Thread poster: Nicholas Stedman

I use both Wordfast and Trados and am having problems with Trados Ergonomics. When I have finished translating a segment I find myself often pressing "copy source" instead of "Save/Close Open/Recover" with the result that my translation gets replaced by the source segment and I have to start again! Am I particularly clumsy? Are there keyboard shortcuts in Trados as in Wordfast?

Yes, Trados has shortcuts and they are visible in the Trados menu, for example: Set-Close Next Open-Get is "Alt" + "+" Copy to Source is "Alt" + "Ins" and so on... If you use alternatively Wordfast and Trados, you may consider reassignign the shortcuts as to have the same set in both programs, and once you get the same habits you will be less likely to press the wrong keys. See the Word and CAT manuals for details on this customization. have a nice weekend customizing Gianfranco

remap shortcuts using word | Jul 11, 2005 |
I explained in a previous post (which I cannot find - Ralf, help!) how to remap keyboard shortcuts for macros (which is what Trados commands are, after all) in Word. You can probably find an explanation on the web. I personally have remapped the "open," "next," "close," and "revert" commands to alt-j, alt-k, alt-l, and alt-;, respectively. Now all the most common commands are under my right hand. This is very handy on laptops, too, since laptops don't have the numeric pad necessary for the stand... In your case, you can remap either the Wordfast or Trados keyboard shortcuts to be the same as each other (or choose a completely new set of shortcuts for both), and you'll no longer have any trouble. Hi Marc, I explained in a previous post (which I cannot find - Ralf, help!) how to remap keyboard shortcuts for macros (which is what Trados commands are, after all) in Word. I take it you're referring to this one? (Check the Forums tab in your profile...) Best, Ralf

Switching between shortcuts | Jul 13, 2005 |
If you are willing to try a little VBA programming, you can even use the same shortcuts for Trados and Wordfast. Open the Visual Basic Editor (under Tools -> Macro) and add the following function to the code module in your Normal.dot template: Sub SetTradosShortcuts() CustomizationContext = NormalTemplate lngKeyCode = Application.BuildKeyCode(wdKeyControl, wdKeyK) Application.KeyBindings.Add wdKeyCategoryMacro, "TemplateProject.tw4wi... Then copy and paste the block of code inside the function and make the appropriate changes for the other macros (i.e. change wdKeyK to wdKeyJ and "tw4winSetCloseOpenGet" to "tw4winSetClose" or whatever you want.) Then make another function called SetWordfastShorcuts(), copy in the same code and change the macro names accordingly. For example "Wordfast.Rosette.WfNextSegment" instead of "TemplateProject.tw4winSetCloseOpenGet.Main". You can find the names for the other functions under Tools->Macro->Macros... Finally, create toolbar buttons to run each of these two functions and you can quickly switch between the two sets of shortcuts. When working in TagEditor, I can also highly recommend the free software called AutoHotKey (http://www.autohotkey.com), which allows you to create your own shortcuts to replace the clumsy ones that Trados doesn't let you change. Hope that doesn't sound too complicated. Good luck! Dan ▲ Collapse
