disappearing foreign characters

I am new to Trados (I own its 6.5 Freelance version) and have a problem with foreign (Polish) characters. When translating from English to Polish, the Workbench displays the term's translation with Polish characters, which is great. Unfortunately, when I click the set/close button to accept the suggested term, the Polish characters disapear and in their place I get some gibberish. I would appreciate any help in solving this problem.
