duplicate translations in TWB

Hi
How does a TM handle identical text translated in 2 different ways. So, if the text was to appear in an update, which of the 2 translations would be offered as 100% match ? Or is it possible that the 2 different translations can be offered to the translator ?
I'm using TWB 6.5.5.438 (build 439).

thanks

I guess you must check the "allow multiple translations" box. Sep 21, 2005

From TWB Help section:

"Allows Multiple Translations
Tells you whether or not the translation memory supports multiple translations for identical source segments. For file-based translation memories, this option is available in the Create Translation Memory dialog box."

Taken From: Translator's Workbench Help, (c) 2003 TRADOS Incorporated.

and ...

"4. Under Multiple Translations, select Allow multiple translations for identical source segments if you wish the new translation memory to support this feature. By default, this option is not selected."

Taken From: Translator's Workbench Help, (c) 2003 TRADOS Incorporated.

Doing this should take care of your problem.

Thanks

Is it normal/standard to allow duplicate translations in TWB ?

Or is it better/safer to allow only the last translation in the TM ?

What do people usually do ?

I don't duplicate Sep 21, 2005

I don't duplicate as in my language pair there is an extremely low need for multivariants and the terminology maintenance is greatly reduced and more acurate if there is a single TU per source segment.

I don't allow multiple translations.

I guess my point is that the reason I have changed the translation in the first place will mainly be that I have found a better expression/phrase/whatever.

Perhaps it's worth a try, though.
It would allow you to chose from all your previous translations (which you won't be able remember yourself), and perhaps you would find that one of them is the most excellent of them all.

This have indeed made me wonder if I should allow multiple translations myself!?! Thanks. ;o)

It depends Sep 21, 2005

I have one big general memory, in which I allow multiple translations, and smaller customer-specific ones, in which I do not feel such need.

But it depends a lot on how you organise your translation memories at the first place.
