Hi all,
I-m using TagEditor to translate an excel file. Thing is, tagEditor takes each cell as a segment, although most cells include line breaks.

Is there a fast way to tell TagEditor to open each sentence [and not each cell] as a segment?

Thank you very much for your help.

Segmentation rules Nov 24, 2006

Hello !

For all the segmentation rules, you need to go into Translator's Workbench.
In the menu File>Setup..., one of the tabs of the dialog is for segmentation rules. You can add or remove segmentation rules.

I haven't tried with Excel myself, but in the "stop character" drop down menu, there is a Newline option that should do the trick.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

JP

Look at the filter settings for Excel Nov 24, 2006

In the Trados menu (via Start) there is a part called "Filters". There you find filter settings for Word, Excel and so on. Please look there.

You can also use the function "shrink segment" or "enlarge segment" from Trados.

Usually (with Excel to) Trados segments at a dot, at line break and so on, unles you did change the default settings.

Regards
Jerzy

Filters Nov 24, 2006

Hi Jerzy,

When I go to Start, All programs, Trados 6.5, Filters...

All I can find is:
Front Mapper for FrameMaker
Front Mapper for InterLeaf
STagger for FrameMaker
STagger for Interleaf

And that-s about it, i-m afraid...

Filter settings added in later versions Nov 24, 2006

Hi Carlos,

There's no entry in the start menu called "Filter Settings"?
I guess this feature was extended only in Trados 7.0.

This is one of the reasons Proz tells you to always mention the exact version that you need support for, whenever posting on the forum.

There should be a way to tweak the segmentation settings in 6.5 too, maybe someone else can chime in?

/Jan

Indeed it is in SDL Trados 2006 Nov 24, 2006

You did not tell us your version, though...

But look in your Trados installation folder.
You´ll find there a file called Excel_something.ini.
When you open it, you will read:

"This is a filter definition file for the TRADOS Filter PlugIn for Microsoft Excel(tm) files. It allows the adjustment of the default settings of the filter. Possible setting values are described later in the file. Any unauthorised modification of the settings might result in the filte

Modifying the settings there might be your way.
In order not to damage anything, make a backup copy of the filter definition file first.

Best

You need to look better Nov 24, 2006

In case of any doubt please always refer to File Format Reference Guide, which can be downloaded from www.translationzone.com

Here is an excerpt from the File Format Reference Guide for Trados 6.5:
During conversion to and from TRADOStag, the Excel filter processes content according to
instructions that are outlined in the Excel filter settings file. The name of this file is
Excel_2_0_0_0.xml and it is installed by default to C:\Program Files\TRADOS\xxx\TT\,
where xxx corresponds to the name of the TRADOS software you are using.

You MUST have the file mentioned.

Jerzy

Today when I wanted to continue translating, I could not open the file. So I asked for the excel files and start from there. However, as the segments are different (now it takes a cell for a segment, instead of a sentence), the TM is not that useful.

Have you ever come across the "no matching filter" thing or know how to handle it?

The client says she's working fine with the xls.ttx file. Maybe I could ask for her XML (filter) file. Do you think this could work?

"I'm all ears".

Thanks a lot!

The ttx must have been created with a newer version of Trados Nov 24, 2006

Why do you not use the "shrink segment" function from Trados?
The segmentation at the dot must work also for Excel.
Using this filter definition (xml might be easily opened and modified with Notepad) you should also be able to set Tageditir so, that it segments after each <BR> tag.

Jerzy

Trados 7 Nov 24, 2006

I've checked with a colleague and, as you say, this must have been done with Trados 7 SDL 2006.

I think I'd better get that Trados version and forget it all.

I tried shrinking, but I'd spend the day shrinking.

Thanks Jerzy and JP!

Where is the "shrink segment" function in TagEditor Nov 25, 2006

Hi Jerzy,

I have been reading this string with interest, as I have this tageditor segmentation problem too. But where is the "shrink segment" function in TagEditor? I only found it in Word, but never in TagEditor. I have both Trados 6.5 and 7.0 on my machine.

Regards,

Dan

Why do you not look at the shortcuts in Word for it? Nov 25, 2006

The same shortcuts work also in Tageditor.
CTRL+ALT+PgUp shrinks the segment, CTRL+ALT+PgDn enlarges the segment.

You could also find exactly the same answer in the Trados help and very probably in the Trados manual.

Regards
Jerzy
