MultiTerm error adding terms to TB: "The term is invalid"

When trying to add a term to my TB via the Microsoft Word interface, I got a very helpful and illustrative error message: "The term is invalid."

The TB is multilingual, but I was adding a Japanese-English pair.

I was able to add the term in MT itself with no hitches, so this is nothing more than an annoyance. But I'd still like to know what's going on, partially because MT remains remarkably stupid when it comes to Chinese and Japanese.

Any illumination would be welcome.
