Hi,
I would like to share with you another way of solving this problem:
Go to Workbench > Options > Translation Memory Options > Tools.
Deselect the option Keep backup and press OK.
Cleanup the file. |

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I hit this same wall and your comment saved me. This document had far too many graphics in it for me to remove them all and then replace them. I tried your solution and it worked the first time around.
Thank you so much Branka!!

The "File is in use" problem is often caused by a programming bug which happens in many programs. MS Word and Windows itself are common culprits.
When a programmer writes a program that has to access a file, the file first has to be opened, then accessed, then closed. Programmers often forget to send the "close" command, or else write the program in such a way that the "close" command is skipped by a mistake in program flow. The result is that although the program terminates, the file is still locked "open".
I have had a simple free program called Unlocker for some time that works great to solve this problem. You can download it from http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/. Not only will it simply "unlock" the locked file, it will report what program is locking the file.

I just received the same error message (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process) when trying to clean a Word 2010 document. None of the suggested solutions worked for me, and finally I simply saved the file as a Word 97-2003 document, and it worked! Hope this can help others too.
P.S. I work with SDL Trados 2007.

Thank you, Branka. The solution you pointed out worked wonderfully.
I have another solution, though. If in a hurry, you can also try cleaning up the file by manually running the TWB clean-up macro. In Word 2007 go to the Developer tab and click Macros. Then select the macro called "tw4winClean.Main" and click Run.
Warning: This procedure will clean the document without updating the TM or creating a backup file. Use only when pressed for time or when you are not willing to spend hours searching for another solution.

In my experience, saving as .rtf before clean-up will solve the problem in most cases.
