Files that cause Workbench to crash

Has anyone any experience of certain files that cause Workbench to crash (and, more importantly how to get over the problem !)?

I have had the odd sentence in a Word file before now and the solution was to delete the sentence and translate it manually.

But I currently have an xls file in which just about every segment causes a crash.

I have even copied the text in it and saved it as a Word file, without formatting. And Workbench still crashes.

Any suggestions for a solution, please?

Have you tried saving it to .ods and back in OpenOffice.org?

You could try translating the file in TagEditor - in fact excel files are happier in TagEditor (I personally use it even for Word files)

corrupt file Jun 29, 2007

Hi!

It could be a corrupt file.

This has happened to me twice, and there was nothing to do but notify the customer and request a new file. There was no way the problem could be solved (I asked people who know quite a lot about these matters).

Best of luck!

Rosa

Wassods? Can I send it to you and let you do it?

I am sorry I haven't come back to you following the fiddling around you did with the Word files that crashed. They weren't a problem in the long run, but this one is; there is hardly anything in the file that I can translate.

I have, however, found a way of saving the text and have translated it into the Trados memory, but I can't get it back into xls format.

Yet another beer I owe you.

Philip

... that I am using TagEditor. TagEditor runs in conjunction with Workbench and it is Workbench that crashes when the problem occurs.

I do a three-fingered salute on Workbench and Tageditor carries on happily afterwards without corrupting the ttx file.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rosa.

My client is an Excel specialist and he has been looking closely to see what there might be in the file to cause the trouble. He hasn't found anything.

You could try updating your Office software Jun 30, 2007

I have had problems with Word crashing in the past when I was using it with Trados.

The problem was that there was an incompatibility between the Trados version I was using and the Office version. The solution was to download and install the 'Office update' patches.

You can do so from this link:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/downloads/maincatalog.aspx

This may not have anything to do with the problem you are having, but I think it may be worth a try.

Good luck,
Paul

Thanks for the link, Paul, but it isn't Word that crashes, it's WorkBench. I have been using Trados 7.1 and Word 2003 together for a long time now - usually successfully !

I have been to the link, but it only offered me an update to Outlook's junk mail filter (which I find is good, BTW).

My machine updates itself regularly, so I don't think the problem lies there.

And now I have a TagEditor file that won't save the translated file ! I wish I could spend more time translating, rather than dealing with defective technology.

Thanks again.

Philip

Maybe you could try using SDLX? Jun 30, 2007

I know the feeling. I recently had a problem where I had two .ppt files that refused to open in the translated version after translation in TagEditor.

I never managed to solve the problem or find out what the reason was for it. I decided to try the SDLX software (that I had never used before) and it worked perfectly. I had to fiddle about a bit to get the TM into SDLX, but other than that it went very well.

If you have the program included in your SDL package, it could be worth a try for you as a workaround for your current problems.

Just a thought.

All the best,
Paul

I use Trados 7.1, which is pre-SDL. Marc P (see above) has helped me set up Omega T, but I haven't got the relevant bits of the TM into it yet.

I have sent the offending file to Trados support and expect an answer from them in the morning. They have always been very helpful in the past when the problem is Trados's. I have never paid a support fee, but they still give a rapid answer.

I downloaded the 30-day trial of Trados 2007 this morning.

It crashes at the same point in the Word file and failed to save the problem target xls file.
