Hi,

I am a newbie to CAT tools. I would like to know the difference between Trados 2007 Freelance SLDX and Trados 2007 Freelance Workbench.

Thanks,

Mohammad

some clues Aug 6, 2007

Hi Mohamad,

in brief, here is the explanation: first there was Trados Translator's Workbench, created by the Trados company and which got to become the most frequently used CAT because it was the only one available for some time. Later on other companies developped their CAT solutions, among wich SDL, whose tool was named SDLX. Some 2 years ago, SDL bought Trados, which explains that now both solutions, Trados Translator's Workbench (and TagEditor and Mutiterm) and SDLX are included

Hi Mohamad,

in brief, here is the explanation: first there was Trados Translator's Workbench, created by the Trados company and which got to become the most frequently used CAT because it was the only one available for some time. Later on other companies developped their CAT solutions, among wich SDL, whose tool was named SDLX. Some 2 years ago, SDL bought Trados, which explains that now both solutions, Trados Translator's Workbench (and TagEditor and Mutiterm) and SDLX are included within the SDL Trados pack.
When you buy SDL Trados, you buy actually 2 products, though it is true that the vast majority of agencies only use the Trados component.
But the company has worked on enhancing the compatibility between the 2 products, so you can most often choose the product you want to work with (some will prefer working within Trados, others (me inclusive) will prefer SDLX). But that is another subjet!
Hope I answered your question anyway!
Cheers,
Annelise

I don't get it... Nov 14, 2007

Hi,

I have the same exact question as Mohammed... I still don't understand the difference between SDLX and Workbench.

For example, I signed up for a groupbuy on proz to get a SDL Trados 2007 Freelance - Certification starter Pack. I get a choice of either SDLX-TGB, or Work Bench-TGB for the starter pack. I have no clue how the two are different, and I can't find any explanation on the difference on the SDL website either... Please help!! ...

Buying SDL Trados 2007 you will get both Workbench and SDLX Nov 14, 2007

The main difference between them is the approach in how you will be working with those programs. While SDLX looks very much like an Excel/Access application, where you work with only one program/interface for all kind of files, with Workbench you will always have two programs running at the time - Workbench for translation memory management and a text editor for editing your text.
Just look at the programs when you have themand you will see the difference.

Using SDLX Nov 14, 2007

Hi,

I have already started working with SDLX. I just choose SDLX and someone told me that I had made a good choice. I think SDLX is something new and Workbench is there for long time.

They say that SDLX tends to be "more simple".

Regards,

Mohammad
