Hi all, I hope this is the right forum to ask, anyway feel free to move this topic to the correct one. My question: I am completely new to TRADOS and I work on a PC with XP Home SP2. I've read somewhere in these forums that it's not possible to get SDL Trados Workbench running with the OpenOffice.org suite (as it's based on VBA, missing in OO) but that WinAlign and SDLX, begin stand alone applications, could run fine. Now, as I wish to go on using OpenOffice and don't have currently the chance to plan a Word 2007/Office 2007 purchase (at least, if it's not strictly necessary), I'd like to know: - What's exactly SDLX? - Could SDLX, say, be used "in place of" Workbench? - Could SDLX and WinAlign be purchased separately form the main suite? - Could the whole SDL Trados freelance package be installed without troubles in a system equipped with OpenOffice only? - What if Word/Office 2007 were installed later? Any help/info about the above will be greatly appreciated! ▲ Collapse

The product you are referring to is SDL Trados. Those two used to be two separate packages, SDLX bought Trados and now they offer you both applications in one package. As for OpenOffice.org, I am sure that Trados supports OOo files if you translate them with the help of TagEditor. As you mentioned yourself, you cannot work from within OOo as the Trados Word plug-in is based on VBA, just like Wordfast is. I can't tell you about the SDL part of the package, i.e. whether t... I can't tell you about the SDL part of the package, i.e. whether the SDL Editor supports OOo files. However, it should be possible to do some roundtripping, i.e. save the OOo file in TagEditor, open and translate with SDL, then export back to TTX, re-open in TagEditor and save as OOo file again. Office 2007 not required | Sep 28, 2007 |
If your customers send you files in the new MS Office 2007 format (docx, xlsx, etc) then you don't need Office 2007 to translate them. TagEditor will open them. SDLX can open them too through the Trados filter which you can find in the project wizard. Earlier versions of Ms Office can also save in the new format if you install the compatibility pack in them. For more information go to the microsoft web site. HTH Piotr

My question is about SDLX, but I have to say I only have the 2005 version (no trados). The thing is: TMs for Trados and Wordfast come in text format, but sdlx TMs are in dababase format. I mean, you don't even know how they work, but the memories open in Microsof Access, in my case right now. When thinking of upgrading to Office 2007, I would have to get the Professional version only to get access, and I could do with a more economic suite if I knew the sdlx memories work wi... Would anyone know? Thanks! ▲ Collapse
