I have a huge, pretranslated Word document where I want to make some changes in the source text only using the replace all command in the find/replace function.

So far I have not been able to get Word to make any such changes to the source text without the target been affected as well.

I am using Trados 2007 SP2 and Word XP.

Thanks in advance,

Bjørnar

Use maintenance function in TWB Feb 9, 2008

I have a huge, pretranslated Word document where I want to make some changes in the target text only using the replace all command in the find/replace function.

I do that pretty much always with the maintenance in TWB and then pretranslate the bilingual file to synchronize.

Regards

Vito

Hide the source text in Word Feb 9, 2008

In Word, go to "Tools > Options > View tab" and uncheck the field labelled "Hidden text".
Then, run "Find and Replace". Now the F&R function won't affect the source text.

hide hidden text Feb 9, 2008

You could simply hide the hidden (source) text and then do a search and replace.
I checked in a sample file, and S+R does not apply to hidden text.

Sorry, I actually meant that I wanted to do changes in the source (not target) only. Making changes in only the target is, of course, straightforward. I have changed the post.

still the right answer Feb 9, 2008

Sorry, I actually meant that I wanted to do changes in the source (not target)

I would use Maintenance for this purpose as well.

Note however that source should be sort of Read/Only: there were cases, where I changed hard breaks with soft breaks. Looking at the file, nothing has changed, but at least the reunited segments made some grammatical sense. Still, I got flamed by the agency because the original file did not translate 100% any more ("...you have not translated the following segments ...) The warning of course applies in any case, whatever method you may eventually decide for.

Regards

add formatting to search string Feb 9, 2008

You could use formatting in your search + replace strings (in Word):
Expand the replace dialog (with cursor on search string field) (click More).
Click Formatting.
Select Font.
Make sure (only) Hidden text is selected.

Do the same for the replace text.

I hope this solves your problem
