Hi everybody,

I am trying to estimate a price for a translation project. I do not have the source text yet as it has tio written according to my specifications. In order to keep the cost down, I plan to make the specifications in such a way that there will be a lot of fuzzy matches. However, I need to know how trados counts fuzzy matches.


Also, is it possible to decided the total amount of words, fuzzy matches BEFORE starting the translation job?

The exact counting algorithm is secret and varies even between different versions.

Furthermore, fuzzy matches are only defined relative to an existing Translation Memory. With an empty TM, you will only have NoMatches and Repetitions, and it is not possible to calculate the fuzzy matches which will be produced during the translation (since the algorithm is secret).

Furthermore, fuzzy matches are only defined relative to an existing Translation Memory. With an empty TM, you will only have NoMatches and Repetitions, and it is not possible to calculate the fuzzy matches which will be produced during the translation (since the algorithm is secret).

What you can do before the actual translation will start is to support the quality and consistency of the translation by creating a style guide comprising a terminology list of important and/or frequent expressions, as well as how to translate standard expressions or sentence structures, and decide whether the style of the translation should be formal, casual, technical, marketing, politically correct or whatever.

And yes, the total amount of words and repetitions can be determined before the translation starts, by applying the Analyze option of the relevant CAT tool.

The fact how well a translation project is prepared will also be taken into account in the price negotiation.
