Whenever starting up my machine (Win Vista x64) I get an error message teling me that Trados Synergy does not work any longer. Even SDL does not work as it should. That's why I want to repair my installation of SDL Trados 2007.

First of all, the installation program wants to install a "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable" (don't know what that is). Unfortunately, the installation of this redistributable fails, so I do not get any further in order to repair the installation (later on, in the Trados installation window, there should be the opportunity to choose wheter I want to remove or repair an existing installation).

Does anybody have an idea what to do? I do not want to remove my installation because I am a bit afraid about the reactivation procedure perhaps awaiting me in such a case. It seems naive to me hoping for help from SDL as people there usually are not very cooperative with technical problems.

Best regards
Matthias

Redistributable Mar 11, 2008

Hi Matthias,

No real answer here, but you can try to download the redistributable from http://www.download.com/Microsoft-Visual-C-2005-SP1-Redistributable-Package-x64-/3000-10253_4-10732887.html.

It's just one or more DLL files from Microsoft that contains objects/controls that are used in Trados, so it's safe to install.

Good luck,
Johnny

Hi both!

SDL Trados doesn´t support 64bit operating systems.

You can find that on http://talisma.sdl.com

TOPIC STARTER
It remains strange... Mar 11, 2008

Hi, and thanks so much for your answers!

The .exe for the distributable refused to run, whatever the reason may have been. I guess I will have to live with it and with those error messages. At least, Trados works on my x64 machine - perhaps because I hadn't read yet what SDL says about that issue.

But as I didn't have the problem in the very beginning after the installation of the software, I suspect that even Vista - like all foregoing versions of Windows - is a self-contaminating system. That's why I think more and more about trying to install Trados on a virtual machine. As soon as that machine goes mad, I could remove it and continue with a copy of the initial, clean system. If it is possible to install Trados on a virtual machine, of course...

Best regards,
Matthias

Exactly, consider downgrading to a 32bit system.

Download that allows Synergy under Vista 64 Mar 24, 2008

It's quite an annoying fact that SDL Synergy will not run under 64 bit Vista (the major reason really just being that SDL compiled it with the wrong settings).

So, my son wrote a small launcher software that will allow it to do so.

You can find it here: http://85.225.97.213/SynergyLauncher.html

Please follow the instructions on the web page and save the file in the Synergy program folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\SDL International\SDL Trados Synergy 2007)

You must then start THE NEW PROGRAM (you could put a shortcut in your Start Menu), not the main Synergy application. The small program opens a process in 32-bit mode and then launches Synergy.

It does work, so far that you can run Synergy, but we have so far not done any extensive testing, so no guarantees are made.

Please report any problems to my son: cnettel at tele2.se

Regards,

Folke A. Nettelblad

Download that allows Synergy under Vista 64 does not work Oct 16, 2008

Dear all,

Thank you very much for all these useful suggestions! I am having exactly the same problem as Matthias and I do appreciate everyone's comments and help.

However, I thought my error would finally disappear once I download your magic software Folke but unfortunately, my Internet would not go through.. I tried with Internet Explorer and Firefox, but they were both unable to proceed.

Have you found other solutions to this problem or is there anything I may not have understood properly?

Thank you

The 64-bit SDL swindle... Oct 16, 2008

As you can see in the SDL marketing statements, like:
http://www.translationzone.com/en/landing/sdl-trados-2007-suite-faq.asp
SDL makes no distinction between 32- and 64-bit.
No distinction at all.

I.e. they suggest Trados works in 64-bit Windows too but when you have purchased the product, you realise it's not true.
It's a false publicity.
The http://talisma.sdl.com article is a bullshit.
IMHO we're entitled to claim it's a bug.

It's perfectly possible to run Trados on virtual machines.
Now, I have virtual two Trados machines on PC and one on my old Mac Powerbook G4 (Power PC)
The work on my old Mac is a pain in the arse (it's like an old Pentium 300 MHz with 256 megs of RAM...) but IMHO it works quite well on both PCs (Centrino Duo etc).
Although some users says it's a pain in the arse too...
