In a recent Powwow in Santiago the idea was born of having a place where the same topics being considered in the Powwows could be discussed, with wider participation. Let’s not forget: Chile is over 4000 km from end to end and some of us live closer to Lima than we do to Santiago.

In a recent Powwow in Santiago the idea was born of having a place where the same topics being considered in the Powwows could be discussed, with wider participation. Let’s not forget: Chile is over 4000 km from end to end and some of us live closer to Lima than we do to Santiago.

In ProZ.com we have the forums, but in PWs we discuss local matters. For that reason I thought of a forum reserved for Proz.com members living in Chile. Why prefer a new formula instead of using the Spanish forum? Because a public sub-forum in the Spanish forum would exclude those who would be interested in reading about Chilean topics but wouldn’t be able to participate. That’s why we asked ProZ.com staff if they could set up Private Forum for the Chilean community. The numbers are eloquent. There are several Chilean associations, but none of them has anything like a hundred members. ProZ.com has more that 300 active users and more than 600 profiles based in Chile. It also seemed a way to get to know each other better.

Of course, it’s early days yet - we’re still getting used to our new surroundings! The first topics have been varied, relating not only to local issues but also to other more-general topics. People already feel “at home” and are free to talk like we do in our country (¡con los chilenismos que nadie entiende!), without using the international Spanish we use for our translations and for the Spanish forum.
