I have been considering purchasing a CAT tool for sometime now and am currently trying to get to grips with Wordfast Pro to understand the benefits. I translate all types of documents, but specialise in business and financial translations and so I think this might really help me to speed up.
I have noticed that many job postings require the use of a CAT tool, and wondered if someone could explain why - surely the customer receives the final document, and so as long as it is in the right format, it doesn't really matter what software is used. Have I missed something?

An agency could provide you with a TM containing legacy translations that you are supposed to use, and pay for the job according to an analysis done with that TM. Your translation from a CAT tool is usually a bilingual document that the agency will use to feed their TM (after the translation is reviewed or not).

It's mostly about consistency. If a customer has regular documents to be translated, he surely wants that all the technical terms are always translated the same way.

Namely, to be able to apply discounts for terms already present in the TM whereas the end client will still be charged the full word rate.
