Because you are also assuming that the user will set up a system with a graphic card that need a fan and more internal fans. It might as well not be the case.

It suggests that the choice of the graphics card is completely irrelevant as far as the noise is concerned...
That is obviously not true, as many of them are quite noisy, if they have a fan - it does not matter whether they are new or old, midrange or cutting-edge. We're just pointing out that if Luca decides to build (or have built) his new machine, this component does need to be taken into consideration.
Of course, he could also go with the onboard graphics, but not all of them support multiple monitors.

Hi Jack, fact is that if you want a reliable USB hub you have to connect it to an extra power supply. My HP has a tendency to loose track of USB devices every once in a while, if I use a simple hub.

It was built by www.kiebel.de, a local shop with an online ordering service that had been recommended by a friend. I told them what I needed and they found the appropriate components.

Hi Jan,
I wonder how is your Dell performing about requirement #1.
(Right now I am working with my Notebook in the next room, secondary monitor keyboard and mouse connected on cables through the door, and I am still a bit annoyed by my HP noise. I is a pity, because otherwise my Pavillon is really doing great!)

Pardon me, but SPCR is not just a blog - it's a full blown, ultimately comprehensive and most professional PC components review site on the planet, period. No other site can match their expertise, attention to detail, methodology and test gear. Seriously, I do mean it, just check out its review sections and forums. Compared to other PC review sites they're like, say, MIT to an elementary school in Arkansas. I've been an active reader & poster there for +5 years. I should know
I'm myself a huge enthusiast of v quiet PCs and go to great lengths to achieve this. Yes, it does take some research and perhaps a little more costly parts, but it's worth it. Especially if you want your PC to not only be unobtrusively quiet, or, as the SPCR folks say "effectively silent" (even tho their anechoic chamber says it's actually above floor noise), but also to have some considerable clout (mainly for gaming purposes).

My bad, Patryk. I wasn’t too sure about the proper etiquettes on this forum. I do hold the same high regard for SPCR as you do, but I do think of it as a blog. Not all blogs are the same =P
So let me reword my suggestion:
Back when I was not afraid of swapping parts in my PC, I used to frequently read Silent PC Review (www.silentpcreview.com). I find its reviews very objective and free of brand bias, and I strongly recommend this resource if you want to delve into the topic of quiet PC’s.

Well Luca- you're answering your own question. Driving 2 monitors is causing your computer to overheat, which means that the cooling fan has to run at maximum speed all the time.
If you still want to run 2 monitors but not have a computer that overheats, you'll need a very powerful new one and will need to make sure it's very well ventilated all round its body.
BTW and FWIW I'm using a MAcBook Pro with a big 21" Apple Cinema display plugged into it. The MBP hardly ever makes any noise at all. It does get slightly warm if I'm doing processor-hungry things such as copying large amounts of data. At such times the fan comes on but it makes very little noise. I'm amazed that some PC people out there have actually been wearing earplugs !

That is absolutely untrue... That is, it might be true if Luca has played the most demanding games on an overclocked graphics card or watched HD video on one monitor and performed calculations in the background - then the second monitor might make a difference. In desktop applications it does not make a difference at all.
For what it is worth, the first graphics card I bought (oh, Matrox, where art thou?) was capable of supporting a second monitor (dualhead, as it was then called). That was in 2000... Also, if it was so demanding, laptop manufacturers would not put on each machine a monitor output port which is usually capable of displaying a different view on the external machine.

SPCR looks exactly like what I have been looking for! Thank you Ambrose!
@Tom - I don't think so: the noise problem started independently, and it continues even with any 1 monitor arrangement (primary monitor is off now, as the notebook is on the floor beyond a closed door).
I have seen on youtube and elsewhere the real cause of this noise: simply dust buildup in a corner where it cannot be removed with compressed air. It is a specific problem on most HP Pavilion dv5000s. A real shame for such an nice machine, which I would gladly continue using for a few more years. Opening the notebook to clean it won't do it either, as it is actually necessary to take it completely apart. (I might try it once I have my new PC in).
I will now plunge into discovering SPCR
