I am looking for cat soft that works native on osx, eventually something that works only in classic will do.

And I mean besides OmegaT. I love OmegaT, I am just looking for all the osx options.

Some users report they are running Wordfast without too many problems on Mac OSX.

i did try... Mar 4, 2004

I used word v.x japanese version and i tried to install wordfast. it worked to a certain point: i was not able to same the tm i had created during the setting phase. it kept saying invalind tm, or something similar.

i am waiting for replies on a similar thread i posted to the japanese forum.

it is possible that something with (jp)word v.x does not allow wordfast to function properly. i installed all the microsoft updates and the system runs ok (1.3.2).

Mémento Mar 4, 2004

You might take a look at "Mémento," which is under development by Technologies Cogilia incorporée in Montréal.

Their website is cogilia.com, and the development discussion group is FutureMacMem (that is where they were distributing the alpha test version last summer).

It looked very promising at the time. I was impressed that they designed it to support Appleworks and TextEdit, as well as Word. The Alpha version did not, however, support Unicode -- yet.

Regards!

iLocalize also Mar 4, 2004

Hi all, I have seen on a Google ad a mention of iLocalize too. Unfortunately, I do not have links or further information. As it is not really my domain I didn't bother to get more information.

iLocalize Mar 5, 2004

Thank you for your reply.

iLocalize is an application dedicated to osx application localizations. Although I have not checked it thoroughly yet, it seems to work similary (or in complement) to appleglot and adviewer, both tools downloadable from apple's developper's section.

iLocalize does not seem to be usable as a generic CAT tool for document formats others that the ones specific to osx apps localization tools formats.

Wordfast + Mac OS X Mar 8, 2004

Hi there !
I work on Mac OS X with Wordfast. The latest version I have ist wf 4.22 and it works alright (on OS 9 too).
Did you try the test version or did you pay for the licence ? Because the free version only works with TMs with a limited size.
Cheers
Emmanuelle

wordfast & japanese Mar 9, 2004

Thank you for your comments.

Most of my jobs are from Japanese (to english or to french) and Wordfast seems to have problems handling 2bytes encoded languages. I discussed that with Mr. Champolion and he agreed that full testing has yet to occur on a Japanese platform.

Right now I am thinking of using OpenOffice in combination with OmegaT (a list to discuss it has just been created at yahoo). Open Office has setting problems to displa Japanese but once the setting is done it looks like it works flawlessly.

Open Office is basically compatible with Word (etc), so :

-the microsoft file is first opened by OpenOffice and automatically converted to its xml based format.

-the xml file is opened within OmegaT and translation can happen

the target file is opened in OpenOffice are converted back to microsoft format

et voilà.

No need to have the word processor open while translating (à la trados (that's for windows but still.), wordfast etc), besides, OmegaT uses only very little memory and can be used for not just one file but a whole project including directories and subdirectories including files. the target projet will be exactly similar in structure. etc.

re: iLocalize - Wordfast - Memento Mar 11, 2004

Like Jean-Cristophe said, iLocalize basically is for the same uses AppleGlot was for, ie. localizing Mac OS X applications only - except it has a lot more features, works very nicely (esp. with AG being no longer updated and very buggy). It handles unicode and glossaries very well, merges files flawlessly, it really is very handy.

It may also have the potential to become a more general TM/CAT tool for all types of documents, in my view. I've worked on the Italian localization of iLocalize (eh) and I'm doing my best to convince the developers to expand its capabilities in order to provide a complete translation memory tool, not just for Mac localization. They're seriously considering it. It's obviously not a quick or easy thing, but I hope it can be done. Having used iLocalize, I must say it's exactly how I want a TM tool to work on Mac - very simple and intuitive. If it can be made to work on all other kinds of text files and be compatible with all other translation memory/glossary formats, it would be fantastic.

I've been hearing about Memento for a while now, I'm looking forward to the release, to check it out.

I've tried OmegaT but I just can't get into it. I experienced difficulties in opening even simple files, and I'm not too keen on Java applications on Mac. It has a good idea at its core, I just wish it was refined a bit further.

Although I've never used any TM tool so far, not working so often on technical stuff, I just gave in and bought Wordfast (through a special offer for members on GoTranslators ). It does work fine on Mac OS X, as long as you have MS Word of course.

But I still wish there was a Mac OS X specific, and stand-alone, application. It would make a big difference, IMHO.

As a longtime Mac user, I think we could all benefit from more choices. And, ahem, on this topic, on the latest MacInTouch reader report on "Mac Marginalization" you can read a semi-rant from someone I know rather well

Ilocalize, OmegaT etc... Mar 13, 2004

Well, if you could influence the ILocalize team to work on a more general tool for translators that would be great.

I know what you mean about OmegaT. It is still a little rought on the edges but since a user community has started to be very active I think the developer has started to take feedback very seriously.

Besides, right now there is nothing better that Wordfast or OmegaT on the mac. Will Memento answer mac translator's community ?
