I find that somewhat incredible!

What I was converting was a German patent. Normally I lay out the cover page manually, according to a style that I already have, and just take the text from the cover page when converting. I usually delete areas such as the bar code. However, I had not noticed that it had put a green box, for text, around the bar code (and all bar codes look the same to me). Anyhow, imagine my astonishment when I looked at my Word document and, there, above, the pate

Anyhow, imagine my astonishment when I looked at my Word document and, there, above, the patent number, in place of the bar code, was the patent number neatly written again, without any mistakes, in a slightly different format. Wow! I had never imagined that Abbyy Fine Reader could read bar codes as well!

OCR is essentially based on pattern recognition, and reading barcodes is a lot easier than reading text (since barcodes are designed for machine reading). Of course, it's not exactly a feature you'd expect to find in an OCR program, but maybe the programmer(s) wanted to have a bit of fun. Barcode reader software is more or less openly available, and the codes are well documented, so implementing the function would not be much work.

Now the question is whether there's a setting to disable this function...

I love this software Mar 28, 2008

Yes, ABBYY Finereader is my favourite, too. Especially if you've worked with other more amateur OCR programmes, even the in-built OCR that scanners often come with, you are certain to get astonished by the accuracy and the friendly conversion that ABBYY provides.

Yeah, barcodes are actually just like any other font. You can install it in Word, and when you type a number, the corresponding bar shows up on your screen:

So it's an easy feature to implement for any OCR program. I'm more surprised that the other OCR software suits didn't implement this yet...

I wonder that's the software I need! Mar 28, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

I have PDF files to translate.
I've been typing and formatting everything to .doc file physically looking at the printed PDF next to my computer. And then use Trados on .doc file.
Would this Abbyy Fine Reader convert everything off PDF to .doc so I don't have to type or make out tables?

Thanks,
Jimi
