Dear Proz community,
Last week I started receiving bulk email by the hundreds (by the minute, actually) to my Inbox. I started deleting them and apparently it worked.
But today my Inbox shows over a thousand emails ("Delivery Message: Failure") or something like that.
I Use NOD32 antivirus in my machine, but I'm not sure how to set up a firewall or something like that in it or if I have to download an additional software to deal with this.

Judging by the message
"Delivery Message: Failure"
someone is using your e-mail address as the return address for spam ("spoofing"), and it's bouncing back to you.
You have my deepest sympathy. It's happened to me, too. and it's very difficult to prevent.

except change email address or, if you have a spam filter, set up messages with the Subject line containing "Delivery Message: Failure" to be filtered to junk.

OTOH- from my own experience- this will stop by itself in a month or so, maybe sooner (as the contract of the concrete spam orderer with the spam senders will expire).

Kevin Fulton or Uldis Liepkalns ! the mean of what they are trying to suggest is just close your ID permanently. I have done this once; and made a strict rule; not to mess with any unknown sender.

As I said, I have experienced this and it has subsided in some time. You know how botnets work- someone hires computers network infected by a special viruses just for purpose of sending out bulk email- as your address appears, it maybe your computer was or was not infected at some time, spammers just might have snatched your email address somewhere on the net (OR DID YOU ANSWER TO SOME SPAM EMAIL?) for a specific spamming cycle, but it passes. After mostly a month you are back to normal (say, only some 50 you know what enlargement emails a day in my case, + umpteen Viagras, + 10 ads of fake watches + few notifications I again today have won GBP 1.400.9000.00 in some lottery I have never participated in, all promptly filtered to Junk by my Email Client Programme.
On the other hand changing email address means you loose your all existing contacts (or have to inform each and every of them about your email address change. With many clients that may not work, as they have many PMs and centralised databases, informing just one of PMs means nothing.
As to me- I have not discarded yet a single address because of the spam- my personal email is unchanged since 1992 and Company ones since 1998-1999. You just have to use spam filters/some other soft for this (the market is overloaded with such).

Never, ever, under any circumstances, even if you register to receive a newsletter from the Holy See, give out your "real" (i.e. business, or even private) e-mail address whenevr you register on any public site - internet store, news service, forum, whatever.
Set up an e-mail address on any of the hundreds of available free services and use it for all activity of this type. And only read e-mail from that one account from the web, don't let it download the e-mails to your computer (a... I have a yahoo account (yes, it's also the account where I get all my ProZ-related e-mail) and use it for all stores, auctions, forums, whatever.
The effect is that my "true" e-mail address is 100% spam free. Zero. I don't like tempting fate by writing this , but that's the way it is. No spam.
