A colleague has recently told me that he's been having an argument with the PM at a French agency who says that the word count according to her latest version of Word (I don't know which) shows fewer words than the word count according to Word 2003.
He asks if that is true or, indeed, possible. Does anyone know?
Kind regards,
Jenny

I have this problem once not long ago. May 24, 2008

Hi,

I have encountered this problem once about a week ago that my word count and the client was not the same. I have used Trados to count them, but the client used MS office, which I guess it is 2003 version.

I have used My version, 2007 to check the count, it is the same with the total number from Trados. I have looked into this problem.

and I found that there is a little box underneat of the word count panel (when it is open) saying "include textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes". If you tick it, it will count all the words. Otherwise, it will exclude texts inside textboxes, footnotes and endnotes. And if that document was exported from PDF, that where the problem occurred. All text exported to doc are placed in textboxes. This would make the number totally different, from 500 reduced to 100 words easily.

That the reason why I count with Trados, it is counting every single word in the document. I would suggest you/your friend send the trados analysis report to your client for the proof.

If you do not have Trados, I would suggest you/your friends to tell your client to double check their word count panel, is the box ticked?

I think this is an acceptable manner to try to proof your count.

Word 2007 counts words in text boxes May 24, 2008

I still use Word 2003 and don't know about the latest version. However, it seems that Word 2007 (finally) counts the words in text boxes.

How about wordcount software? May 25, 2008

I downloaded a software from the following site:

http://www.globalrendering.com/wordcount/wordcount.zip

I found it extremely useful since you can count not only .doc files but .html and .pdf too.
The company's website is the following:

http://www.globalrendering.com/index.html

Good luck!
Angélica
