I need to listen to at least the audio portion of a DVD to quote on a transcription project. The client has uploaded the disc to their FTP site; it's a bunch of .vob, .ifo, and .bup files. I've been floundering around trying to find players to download and/or to convert the files to another type, with no success. I'm not even sure what I need to do and would welcome any suggestions. Thanks.

Basically, the .IFO files contain menus and other information about the video and audio. The .BUP files are backup copies of the .IFO file. The .VOB file (for DVD-Video) and .AOB file (for DVD-Audio) are MPEG-2 program streams with additional packets containing navigation and search information. Media Player Classic can play back DVD files and allows you to navigate through a DVD easily. Besides, it is a free software. Apparently if you change the file name extension .VOB and rename it .MPG, you should be able to play the file. Have a look here: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/389926/convert_vob_dvd_to_mpeg_files_no_recoding/ You can also use a converter: - VSO DivxToDVD (freeware) available for download here: http://www.clubic.com/lancer-le-telechargement-19450-0-divxtodvd.html OR - WinAVI: http://www.moviecodec.com/scripts/search.php?fq=WinAVI I hope this helps! Best of luck with your project. ▲ Collapse

The filetypes you mention are all part of a DVD movie. The .bup files are basically backups of the .ifo files, and as such, they don't need to be be processed either. So, you basically need to only concentrate on the .vob files. However, check with the client what kind of output they want. If they want a fully functional DVD (which includes all three above discussed filestypes), then you may need to use DVD authoring software to produce the final output. To my knowledge, there isn't any freeware DVD authoring software that is fully functional and usable out of the box. You may need to shop around. I have used the Sonic suite for handling DVDs, but I never authored using it. You may want to check it out, although I am not sure if it's of any use in your case. In any case, you may want to use this Wikipedia article to get you started: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_authoring All the best! ▲ Collapse

Thank you all for taking the time to give me suggestions. As seems to happen frequently with technical problems, it turned out to be something obvious... Basically, I thought it wasn't playing properly because there was no sound associated with the file I downloaded, but then I realized that there wasn't supposed to be any sound associated with the file I downloaded; it was the opening "menu" page of the DVD. Sigh. Enjoy the weekend, Clare

These files make up a DVD! I use PowerDVD (paid app) to play it. Right-click VIDEO_TS.IFO and choose "Play with PowerDVD" (once you have PowerDVD installed). Voilà! You can buy old (v6) and legal versions of PowerDVD very cheap at ebay (US$ 1.00 !!!). It is the best DVD player program out there, IMO.

Hi! This is a grand tool. One can extract the audio part and transcribe. One can compress and or convert into various formats as well. Vob and other formats you have mentioned are DVD formats and are usually very large files. Brandis

As colleagues have already stated, these files make up a DVD. Simply select the burn-to-DVD function of any DVD burning/authoring software (Sonic, Nero, Roxio, etc. - if you have a DVD burner on your computer, or an external DVD drive, most likely it has come with some version of these. There are probably ways to play these files directly but I'm not familiar with them. Alternatively, use Handbrake to create an mp4 file compatible with your portable entertainment device.

Only VOB is video. IFO is the index, and BUP is the backup of IFO. Use Media Player Classic -- it is free and opens everything.
