Books with "Web design" in the title are likely to be HTML tutorials. The one I used first is "Learning Web Design" by Jennifer Niederst, published by O'Reilly. It teaches HTML and some associated topics for people who want to use it to make Web sites.
A useful pocket-size summary is O'Reilly's "HTML Pocket Reference".
