My PC has Windows 98. If I download Skype, will it work properly? Does anybody have any experience using Skype with Win98? Thanks and regards.

According to their web site, the current version of Skype requires Windows XP, 2000 or Vista.

Question about Skype | Feb 3, 2008 |
I have read the comments on this thread about Skype and, although this question of mine is not related to the types of OS compatible with the various Skype versions, a question has popped in my mind. See more I have read the comments on this thread about Skype and, although this question of mine is not related to the types of OS compatible with the various Skype versions, a question has popped in my mind. I asked my PC technician if it was proper and what were the risks involved as compared to the benefits and since many have asked me to install it. He (the technician has advised me against it) stating that the program can bring viruses together/inserted with some of the messages/communications and bypass the virus control program, so I forwent installing it. Can you safely say that these are not true and the program is safe to use? Thanks for your input even if my question is not directly related to the types of OS on which Skype can operate. I have XP and since my PC technician told me that I was rather scared to install it. ▲ Collapse

I'm not a technician but... | Feb 3, 2008 |
I have been using Skype for three years now, on the advice of my technician, without a problem. There is a facility to transfer files through Skype and sometimes it is a good option when the email is playing up or it is a small file. But no stranger has ever tried to send me a file through Skype and I wouldn't have to accept it if they did. Otherwise I cannot imagine how on earth the chat facility or phone-call facility could cause a virus.
That's right Lesley | Feb 3, 2008 |
Me too. I'm a Skype user since long ago, like many millions more (there are 8,005, 653 users connected at this very moment) and never got a virus through it. I use it for work, chat, and really enjoy its low fees when needed for international phone calls. No risks at all when you know from whom you're accepting files.
A virus could come in only with a file | Feb 3, 2008 |
If you trust who is sending a file, there are no risks at all. I have used Skype for several years now, and no unknown person has ever attempted to send me a file. This said, I would hesitate to install a much previous version as since then many bugs have been fixed.

I used Skype in my Win 98 days without any problem. But our colleagues here are correct, the Skype software versions du jour then were old ones; maybe the later upgrades won't work with Win 98. I expect unknown callers to identify themselves and give me an idea on what they are up to before accepting their contact. Skype is great for quick sharing of files, e.g. when you are cooperating with fellow translators. One valuable tip: If the file is larger than just a few KB, close the chat window while doing it and its transfer will go much, much faster. And this can never be overstated: whenever you receive such a file, always scan it with your updated antivirus software before opening! Maybe your good friend doesn't know yet their computer is infected.
