A parallel network had been set up, allowing access to a private connection via a laptop computer by buying names of users and passwords of some authorised administrators ("administratores de red") but this is in the process of disappearing since it does not provide enough anonymity and the authorities know who is running it. There is a “national” network which provides access to an electronic address and allows emails to be sent abroad but does not permit net-surfing. The regime ensures that no “subversive messages” are sent through software installed by Cuban police which triggers alarm messages and filters key words on computers in hotels and cybercafés. Connection to the “international” network, which costs three times as much, does allow access to foreign news websites such as the BBC, Le Monde, the Nuevo Herald (Miami-based Spanish-language daily). But if you type “google.fr”, you are redirected to the pages of the official Cuban newspaper, Granma or the news agency Prensa Latina. No seré yo quien hable de política | May 24, 2008 |
