Duties and Responsabilities:

Under the immediate direction of the Deputy Director, Translation Services, and the overall direction of the Director, Conference Division, the incumbent will:

1.Translate and self-revise texts covering a wide range of technical, legal and administrative subjects from French and Spanish and occasionally, if possible, from other languages, into English. Texts may be intended for use in documents or publications or may be incoming correspondence an English translation of which is needed for use within the Secretariat;

2.Advise on translation work into English to be done outside the Organization by freelance translators. Revise their work as necessary;

3.Assist in the recruitment of supernumerary précis-writers, translators and revisers and supervise and revise their work as necessary, in particular during conferences and sessions of the Assembly and Council;

4.Revise summary records as drafted by précis-writers and collate amendments submitted by Member Governments and by the Secretariat;

5.Edit texts of documents or publications of the Organization with a view to ensuring correctness and uniformity of terminology and style and advise other services of the Secretariat on editing;

6.Update the IMO Style Manual and keep it under review and assist members of the Secretariat on questions arising from the Manual or on matters of a linguistic nature;

7.Participate in research on terminology for incorporation into the terminology database of the Translation Services. Approve all English terms prior to their inclusion;

8.Take part in drafting committees set up during meetings as required;9. Undertake other related duties as may be assigned by the Secretary﷓General.
