Folks,

Sometimes I use Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 Preferred. Yesterday, I had to do a system restore because I lost some data. I got a message that the restore process had involved changing the names of some of Dragon’s files and folders.

Since then, Dragon has been unable to load my voice files. It simply doesn’t work. When I try to load my user profile, I get a message saying “The vocabulary you have chosen ‘General-Large’ is incompatible or invalid”. ... See more

On this matter, the support section on the website of Scansoft (which makes Dragon) simply says that the software might not work after a system restore in Windows XP. It suggests reinstalling the software. I did that, and it still doesn’t work. All the voice files are still there. I can see them in Windows Explorer, but Dragon is not accessing them. It took several months to train the system and build up the voice files, so I’m reluctant to uninstall the program completely and then re-install it, in case I lose all those files.

As far as I can tell from the website, the manufacturer will charge me about $20 for a phone call to get advice on this problem. I’m willing to pay the $20, but I thought I’d try ProZ first.

Any experts out there who can help me with this? It might simply be a question of renaming the files and folders whose names were changed during the system restore, but I don’t know what to change them to.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Hi Hobert and Toledo,
I have just had the same nasty experience after a restore in XP. Natspeak Pref 7 gives me an error on startup saying there the vocabulary in incompatible with the amount on memory. And I have use Natspeak for years and changed nothing -- the restore was totally unconnected with Natspeak.
So if you tell me how you got round this I would very much appreciate.

The reply/advice Jack got from the Yahoo group VoiceGroup was:

From your description I deduce that you have not exported your User
profiles to some other storage medium (CD, external disk, different
partition). Had you done that, you would not have lost your month-
long customizations and trainings.

What you must do now is uninstall DNS completely, including deletion
of all of the DNS items in the Registry, then re-install a clean
copy. You can try keeping the entire "Users" folder by copying it
temporarily to some other partition. After re-intallation, if DNS
works properly, you can try and copy the User files to the new Users
folder, overwriting the newly installed files. This may ruin DNS
again, but it also may salvage your customized profile.

If this works, remember to immediately make an Export copy of your
user profiles for better restoration next time.

At SR_for_translators it was:

I know someone who can help you but needs to know what language are you using.

Someone posted:

I have the same problem Jack Bowman posted and xxxxxx xxxxxx responded to on 12-31-04, but I can't find the solution. Can you direct me to it, please or permit me to post this inquiry? Thank you.

about 2 weeks ago on SR_for_translators, so you may need to sign up to the Yahoo groups to find out more.

(Don't think I'm betraying any confidentiality here!)

roll back the system restore Mar 25, 2010

hello,

I had the exact same problem and I opted instead to roll back the system restore then save a backup of my user files to somewhere safe and then do the system restore to fix the OS problem then restore the dragon profile so that I can keep my months of hard work training Dragon
