Subtitling Conferences, trade associations or publications?

I am a graduate student in translation/interpretation and want to become a subtitler. However, my university does not offer a speciality, and therefore I am having to research the field on my own. Does anyone have information on upcoming conferences in the US, trade associations that I could look into joining, or publications used in the field to which I could subscribe? Thanks for your help!

a few links Dec 10, 2005

Hi Crice! I also just graduated I wrote my MA thesis on audiovisual translation and here are some links that I found very useful:

http://accurapid.com/journal/toc.htm#art (Translation Journal, section: Arts and Entertainment)

http://www.geocities.com/karamitroglou/fotios.html
(Dr Fotios Karamitroglou)

I'm sure my experienced colleagues will give you some professional advice but I hope the articles will come in handy as well.

Best of luck!

Joanna

associations and conferences Dec 11, 2005

I think a great resource is ESIST The European Association
for Studies in Screen Translation
I recommend the links page: http://www.esist.org/Useful%20links.html

They also sponsor a Conference
The 6th Languages & The Media conference
will be taking place from October 25 - 27, 2006
http://www.languages-media.com/lang_media_2004/index.html
You can see the program of the 2004 conference and get a general idea.

There are several subtitling companies offering internships or trainings (these can be rather expensive), but for a student the internship option could be interesting.
