http://w1.sydsvenskan.se//Article.jsp?article=10091542

Totalt enig!! Aug 18, 2004

I can't write Swedish, so I won't try... but this chain should be posted in all languages!

Including English in fact. Sometimes colleagues ask me what I make of an English version which they are trying to use as a source text... and my answer is that I wouldn't dare try it out on any equipment I owned. So it is untranslatable.

I have also battled with trying to translate instruction manuals myself... and it is absolutely necessary to ask for pictures and diagrams, check with the manufacturers and insist on spending the time required to do the job properly.

Translators may be the first 'idiots' who do not understand the instructions, but there are sure to be more!! In the long run it must be in everybody's interest to provide clear, correct instructions - and the manufacturers who do so know that.

Instead of giving up or damaging the equipment or not getting it to work as it should, we should all go to our local consumer associations and demand that manufacturers comply with the law.

And as translators we should insist on understanding the text ourselves, not just feeding it into the CAT tool and hoping for the best. (I'm just proofing a text someone has got out of a CAT and it's driving me nuts...)

A nice evening is had, as the CAT would put it... (Or so I hope for everyone).

Ju fler desto bÀttre! Aug 18, 2004
