We use it we love it

Here on the Open Language Programme at London Metropolitan University we use "Novo Avenida Brasil". It is an excellent textbook and despite the fact that it does not come with a bilingual glossary at the end (which learners in the UK tend to be hooked to), it is very popular with students.
From a teacher's point of view it offers a fast progression which enables the use of the target language in class immediately... it is based on very sound language learning theories and has the very rare quality of having good recordings on the CD...
Please note that all these compliments come from a language teacher who usually detests textbooks.
When I introduced Brazilian Portuguese on the programme, I spent hours looking at textbooks and this one really stood out.
If you are teaching yourself, I would really recommend the interactions you can have online with the thousands of Brazilians registered on Busuu (http://www.busuu.com) - it is free, it is fun, it is real! (just skip all the learning sections).
