England or Great Britain? :-) Mar 13, 2006

Try Wikipedia, which provides a short history with lots of links:

An alternative and not completely serious history - if you can find a printed version of 1066 And All That it will definitely brighten up your research and probably your lessons too though its humour has dated slightly since it was first published in 1930. There is a recent update called 1966 And All That by Craig Brown, (not to be confused with a book of the same title by Sir Geoff Hurst of Hatterick about a certain football tournament in that year).
Good luck

How old are your students? Mar 14, 2006

If they are not very old, that is, if they are children, "The Child's History of England" by Charles Dickens (yes, the same famous novelist of Nickolas Nickelby (and many others) fame) may be tried. It is quite well written and summarizes the history of England from the earliest times to about mid 18 century.

It is not short, though, as it runs to about 500 pages.

You can download a free version of this book from:

You will require Microsoft Reader software to read this download. This software is available for free download at:

I was able to find in that collection many books that I had always wanted to read but could not lay my hands on, particularly American classics.

We have a good network of British libraries in India which stock exclusively British literature, but American books are hard to come by.

I downloaded the entire set of Tarzan books from the list which I had always wanted to read as a boy but could not as they were not available in India. Now at forty-five I am reading through the series at the rate of one book a week, in competition with my thirteen year old daughter! The only regret of both of us is that the full set of all the 27 Tarzan books is not there.

I have also downloaded all the Charles Dickens novels in the list.
