How to get courses to run?! Thread poster: Julian Wood

Hi there Everyone I am a part-time teacher of languages to adults- which I enjoy Community Education are putting on a course for both my 'small' languages- Czech and Welsh- but DEPENDENT ON NUMBERS! This is always the catch with such courses. So, who's got some good ideas on how to advertise the courses myself (I'm allowed to), and get the things running?!

You must be seen to be doing things. Just one idea flyers with all the info. Car windscreens for a 'Welsh event'. Not so sure about the other
Supermarket bulletin board | Mar 8, 2007 |
I do not know about the UK but in the USA there are bulletin boards in the supermarkets where people announce events, sales, etc. In some countries, radio and TV stations must broadcast free public interest announcements.
There are also those magnets to stick on your car | Mar 8, 2007 |
Here in the US you can have a magnet printed with whatever your company is etc, they cost between 40 and 80 USD for two, depending on where you live. I don't know if that can be done in the UK, but what is good is that you can choose if you want them on your car or not. Of course in your case it would be a provisional thing, maybe too short to consider the expense, but it's an idea anyway.

Local paper? Library? | Mar 8, 2007 |
Not necessarily a paid advert, but maybe a small article with a brief profile on either you or the organisation giving the course(s)? Your local library, if you still have such a thing, probably has a noticeboard too. Poster in bookshop window?
Create interest by showing interesting things about the languages | Mar 8, 2007 |
I would make a poster (one for each language) on a regular letter-sized piece of paper to be posted/distributed in the ways others have already mentioned. The poster would have images of famous people associated with the language or the regions where the language is spoken. The more glamorous or notorious the people, the better. You could put a caption on it saying "What do (person X), (person Y) and (person Z) have in common? They all speak (language)." Or give a combination of famous people and famous/exotic-sounding things, and say "They're all from (place where the language is spoken)." For example, for Welsh you could mention/use a photo of people from Wales, like Dylan Thomas, Roald Dahl, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Even if these people didn't/don't necessarily speak Welsh, they are part of the Welsh culture. You could also include the Welsh flag. Look for interesting facts about the language -- maybe it's really old, or belongs to a rare language family, or has other unique and interesting details. You could also have a separate poster that says: "What is a (insert exotic-looking Welsh word)? a) (picture of something) b) (picture of something else) c) (picture of yet another thing, humorous if possible) Find out in Conversational Welsh 101, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8pm starting March 20" ▲ Collapse

Just to say that recruitment is going well- especially on the Welsh front. It goes to show it's worth putting in the extra effort, and can be fun too
