I am translating a project recieved from a client in Transit XV (SP19) on WinXP SP2. If I type "è" or "é", these characters appear as a brown asterisk "*" . The asterisk behaves a bit like a code: I cannot delete it with backspace or del, and I cannot replace it with another charcter by selecting it and pressing another key. However if I select it hit del it goes away.

If then I press again "è" or "é" this time the corresponding character appears correctly, but in brown color.
Then if I type the rest of the sentence too quickly, the è or é gets automatically replaced by a brown asterisk again.
I have noticed that the original Dutch files already included a few brown asterisks, mostly corresponding to opening or closing double or single quotes (curly I guess; my straight quotes do not create any problem).
Also, there are NO problems with other accented characters including ì ù à and even ^e or capital è (which I can only insert wiht character picker under Options).
I have worked quite a lot with Transit XV in the past and never had anything like this earlier. Do you have an explanation/solution for this?

"è" on Transit - even more strange
Aug 29, 2008
I have just discovered that the original text has some "è" characters in it, which are displayed correctly. I can copy and paste these "è" and get a regular display too. But if I press the è key on the keyboaard I just get the brown star as above.
Apparently there is no way I can make a global search and replace either: the brown star character is also appearing in place of inverted commas, dashes and diameter symbol. Moreover it cannot be pasted in the search field.

I hoped some expert user should easily point me in the right direction...
