Moving to Mexico after being established in UK

Hello!

This is my first post so please be kind hehe!

I have some general questions that I was hoping someone here may be able to help me with.

Next year, I will be studying for an MA in Technical and Specialised Translation in French, German and Spanish. This course will take about a year. After completing the course, I plan to spend a couple of years establishing myself as a translator in the UK, buidling up clients in Europe, North America etc. After constructing a solid client base, I would like to move to Mexico to join my partner.

My question is whether I would be able to continue working for these same clients at the identical rate I was charging in the UK. My goal is to continue to earn a 'European' translator's salary while living in Mexico. Is this at all possible or is it just pie in the sky?

I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone here may be able to offer.

Many thanks!

getting established first is the key Sep 2, 2009

I think that if you get established in the UK first, you will be able to continue working for those clients you have acquired while in the UK at the same rates. You will however, have to adapt to the going rates in Mexico if you accept local clients when you move here.

I know several translators whose main clientele is located in a different country that the country where they live and as long as you establish rates and terms ahead of time, you should not have a problem.

I would suggest taking into account how you will bill your clients, etc.,(for tax reasons), so you do not have any problems when you relocate.

I wish you the best, it is good you are planning ahead!

Greeting from Cancun, Mexico

Your place of work is the internet, not a "country" Sep 2, 2009

Your place of work is not the UK or Mexico.

Your place of work is the internet (you work over the internet, right?)

Therefore, wherever you are, you are at the same place of work, and you charge the same fee.
