Now, the topic of client education comes up fairly often on this forum. But peer education seldom comes up. In my case also, it took me about four years to understand how this industry works. Thinking back at the years before I finally understood the mechanics of freelance translation, I now know I've been tried on and was a perfect fit many times. I sure would have been glad if someone had reached out to me and helped me understand sooner. The nice thing is that no matter how experienced we become over time, helping the more inexperienced among us is not just about helping them - we are helping ourselves by extension. Either way, it's good karma. I think I just explained why it doesn't bother me when people post threads moaning about ridiculous rates and excentric requests, and why I partake in them. We need to talk these things over time after time as long as our industry is stuck in this state. It's not about moaning - it's about helping people to understand and then empowering them to do something about it.
