... a job has just been posted in my language pair that requires Trados and Tag Editor. I've just purchased Trados, but I've not yet used it. Does "Tag Editor" come with the Trados package or is this a separate program? ...
...I bought Trados a couple of months ago, and I.m going crazy! Especially when it comes to importing and exporting I'm lost. I took the first Training from SDL Trados, Getting Started, but it confused me more than anything. I'm trying to put as much data as possible into one translation memory, but am never sure of what I am doing, if in fact my TM is accumulating data. As well, I have nightmares with TagEditor. When I translate in TagEditor, I can't get the translation to a .tmw, only .ttx. ...

As I have expressed in the past, you should not pay for Trados without paying for training too...

Regarding "I'm black and proud", I think "TRADOS - and I like it" describes the situation better. |

Surely all this will go by the board once SDL moves to XLIFF and that becomes the de facto standard? You'll be able to use whatever tool you want as long as it's XLIFF compatible?

The standards are the way out of any parochialism, intended or unintended. They give us all back our freedom of decision as regards tools.
Customer:"I assume, this here SoDART 2012 Freelance is XLIFF-compliant?"
Dealer H.:"Excuse me, we dont sell anything in this establishment, that's not fully compliant with the latest standards."
Customer:"Fine. Now, I understand I get a complementary coffee cup holder with it..."
Dealer H.:"Actually TWO (combination coffee&coke) cup holders. And a golden membership card to boot."

Do XLIFF or TMX comprise segmentation and counting algorithms?
Otherwise we would need a new standard etc. etc. ... never ending story.

How the segmented information in the languages involved is obtained, is orthogonal to the intention of the standards. Otoh segmenting is NOT that hard a job, given decent Regex tools. And counting is a deterministic task, once segmentation has been done.
Otherwise we would need a new standard etc. etc. ... never ending story. |

OpenSource can get you a perfect mileage for your money.

The standard for segmentation is SRX (Segmentation Rules eXchange). SRX 2.0 is already supported by some tools.
The standard for counting is GMX-V (Globalization Management eXchange - Volume). As far as I know, only one company implemented it.

Thanks, this comes close to it. They even have a named category for Fuzzy match counts (e.g. 95-99% match), but the definition what exactly a fuzzy match ist, or how you can calculate the 95-99% is still missing.

I bought Trados 5.5 in 2002 and looked at the tutorial. After that I started to use Wordfast and never touched Trados for two years.
After a while one customer sent translation memories for Trados and required to use TE. Because these jobs are mostly updates of huge files, I ran the analysis, exported the unknowns, translated in Wf and cleaned up in WB. Then I run the tm in TE using Translate to fuzzy. No problem ever.
Nowadays I use Trados, SDLX, Transit and WF often at the same time for different jobs.
I prefer to work in Word with Wordfast.
Problems either can be solved by posting here or they are not solvable (happens sometimes).
So I never had any training.
Regards
