What is MySQL (structered query language)and why is it important in a database environment.

Don't confuse MySQL with SQL. MySQL is a database server that is used by most ISPs and is the foundation of most internet portals (I am not sure whether Proz.com uses MySQL).
SQL is the so called structured query language. This is the "programming" language used to query a database, such as MySQL. However, it is not limited to MySQL. AFAIK, every database application, including Oracle and MS Access, uses SQL, even if each has a different "dialect".

Why is it important? Because this language is used to obtain the necessary information from a database.
